Finji- love it, the bass really consumed me :3

Jay- really nice use of space and atmosphere, just not really feeling the kick

alrighty, new 140 bit from me. been experimenting with instead of making a defined intro drop build drop outro, recently ive been making a couple 16 bar loops and finding ways in which they work best. idk i think it makes tunes less boring. :)

serious track, surprising to see some good grime tunage come from you of all people

i'd agree with jate though, stabs could use a little work. i'd definitely keep them because they work well with the track, but i think they're just too bright sounding and also a bit louder in the mix than they have to be

that's your definition of grime?

to me it shares a lot of similarities with some stereotypical grime stuff - obviously the overdriven kick, the high pitched string sample (just listen to something like strings hoe or tings in boots), and in general just the rhythms and the way you sequenced certain elements
jayladders wrote:more 2step than grime really
most grime (especially the type of sound found in the early years of its evolution) can really just be classified as a subgenre of 2step, just like the early dubstep sound

aint you never heard wot u call it?

"wot u call it?" "garage?"
"wot u call it?" "urban?"
"wot u call it?" "2step?"

so youre generalizing an entire genre based on one track that youre not particularly fond of

ive never had the opportunity to hear it out, but i can tell that's the type of tune that goes off in the dance. i know i'd be goin mad. it's like duppy soursop... i thought it was one of the worst tracks i'd ever heard but when i heard it out, it was fucking massive and it just finally made sense

fair enough, that track's a bit of an extreme though lol. that particular youtube clip of it is actually a terrible one too

the way i see it: you sorta got to remember that grime really is urban music at its heart. a lot of it was basically just a bunch of teenagers playing around with software (especially back in the day when there werent sites like DSF and "production bibles" and vengeance sample packs, etc), who all sort of collectively came upon this new, original sound

personally, i love the rawness. it's that same type of rawness that, in my eyes, makes the dubstep from the earlier days so much better than almost anything coming out nowadays. the rawness really just makes me feel that i'm listening to is something sincere. you've no doubt often heard about the idea that beauty lies in imperfection, and that's what it really comes down to - at least for me.

or of course, you simply don't like grime. different strokes for different folks obviously, but based on some of your tunes... ;-)
