It's Resampling's Fault!

Post by Inavon » Sun Mar 31, 2013 8:21 pm

Guys, before resampling, everything i had sound just below average.
Know that i've gotten more into the more advanced techniques, ( not that i'm any good at them ) the sounds i am able to produce are completely different to my norm.. how can i somehow get my old self up to par?

This is what i've got to after 3 days resampling.. the last sound is the most processed the first couple are half-assed..

Yeah, take this as an example.
I start off with a basic fm based synth, when compared with other resampled and fq split sounds they cant compare.. How can i make it so they both sound equally as good?
I don't want noize to be my strongpoint :P

this one for the heavy listeners, i've always wanted to make something proper heavy and i think i have a good start, just need a second half and spruce up the start. but do you generally keep the hats/percussion pretty low in reece/sub heavy tracks kinda like twofold/excision/datsik type stuff? and just go wild with the snare it seems? anwyay lemme know how it sounds i assume my levels might be way off i didnt put anything onmaster bus either for export. aight off to do some reviews.

heres the track

Love the intro synths,really original sounding intro.The techno type stab could maybe be a bit bigger,like make it huge with verb and really bring it out,it sounds awesome just needs to be a little bigger.
Everything about the track i feel is really good and it sounds so different to normal stuff posted which is a good thing.
That sub on the breakdown nearly had me coming in my pants!!!
Brilliant tune brutha,feeling it big time.

@Hashkey
Intro is dark as fuck!!
Drop is nice drums just lack a bit of punch.The sub and the kick sound nice and sit well together but the snare just lacks a bit of presence.
I feel the drop just sounds a little to tame with that really dark intro,it fits perfectly but just drops in a little weak on the impact side of things.
Maybe boosting the snare and hats might do the trick to add the present it seems to be lacking.
Sound design is spot on,everything sounds really well created and the vocal on the break is quality.
Mixdown is nice,sounds clean but still with added warmth which is a nice touch.
Nice production real real nice.

@Dotcurrency
Well not a massive fan of the content but it is really well put together.
On the mastering front,i'm listening on beer 770 pro's and shit sounds sweeeeeet.
Kick and sub sound fucking huge and the mix sounds so so clean.
If this is your first sttempt at mastering i take my internet hat off to you because it sounds spot on.

@Gaol
Again synths on the intro sound nice,got a real plucky sound to them.
Intro drums can do with some serious work though,sounding pretty weak on my cans.Snare is near nonexistent.
Drop is ok,not my sort of thing but the sound design is fairly decent,again though drums need some serious beefing up,just not sitting in the mix right for me.
Everything else is beefy as fuck with loads of bottom end but it sort of kills the drums.
For me layer the drums or even just try bringing the volume up a bit on the drum bus or drum channels.
Nice track just not really my sort of thing.

@Acro
Well again brilliant intro.Love the lead synth at the beginning too.
Not so sure about the drop,mix needs definite work,things just sound way to messy as it is.I like the drum work and if i'm honest half expected a trap tune so glad it never went that route.
I like the overall idea just think there is some serious work that the mix needs.

@Faare Faced
Track is most certainly not for me so not really going to comment to much on the content.
Sound design for me is stunning and i feel the machine gun bass doesn't really fit.I can see what your saying about it sounding good as stand alone sound but sonically it doesn't fit the other sounds.
Mix is good,maybe a bit loud but sounds pretty tight.

@The wiggle baron
Love the drums on the intro,kick sounds a little to dull but i will wait and see how it progresses first.
The drop is really different and i like the vocal/synth sound you used.Maybe the drops a little quite for me so lacks a bit of impact from the transition from the intro.
Maybe some top end on the kick,it does sound really lifeless so just layer it maybe?
The arrangement gets a little boring so needs work.
Overall nice a tune with a fairly decent mixdown.

@RandoRando
Nice intro mate,synth line is really full of suspense with a touch of dread which i feel goes really well with the vocal.
Sound design is fucking ace mate,drums sound wicked and mixdown is tight as.
Not really a lot to add because it is a really decent tune.
Love the pad/strings in the background,love the fact it's bro with not being too bro if you get me.Very Reso-esque.
Big tune brother

Right heres mine,pretty short at the moment.Most of the elements in there i will spread over the arrangement but maybe add some sax on a bridge later on.
Let me know what you think!

@Hide_One love the track; nice kinda DnB feel to it, and i lvoe the simplicity, though im sure it wasnt too easy when you were laying it out. Mad respect!

@ Hashkey great minimal feel to your track. I could seriously use some lessons in how you do your drum patterns cuz mine aren't nearly as good. I really dig the vibe on the track too!

Well, here's a track I've been working on the last few days; a work in progress, but i'd love some feedback on it if you guys have the time. Ideas are welcome!

yo 3d shades listening right now, overall vibe is cool heh, did you lo fi alot of the samples or is that just encoding? this like space robot flying in space shit haha, spruce up the drums and wobble and you've gota winnner cool track

mthrfnk wrote:@lloydy: Intro pianos are sweet, are they sampled or sequenced? The perc is great too. The pads and bass work well together and the little vocal flutters definitely add a nice extra layer. So far the mix sounds good, everything is clear and pronounced. I'd don't really have much to criticise, I'd like to see where this track goes.

@Ape Lust: Lol you realise you gam feedback to people on Page 1? The tracks got a nice idea, but I'd clean up the wobble a bit, seems too crunchy. The chip sounds on the lead suit the style I think you're going for too. The mix is muddy, you definitely need to bring out the kick and snare, all I'm catching of the snare is the top end white noise. Try and clean out the mix for the drums and make them punchier.

@BloodySnort: Man I'd lose the oioioi sounds tbh, they're way overused. Tbh I'd work on the sound design you have first before anything else, to try and improve the midranges you have to be less "generic" then try and improve the syncopation between the midranges and other elements (some pads or stabs might be nice). Mix seems okay, although the toms sound a little misplaced.

@RandoRando: Loving the prometheus samples. Sound design is quite cool, I love the little fluttering phasey reese thats at 1.04ish. Imo I'd work on your drums a bit to really get your kick punching through the midrange, some reverb on the snare might be nice too as it seems really dry. I'd also have a break somewhere, especially from the pads, maybe only a small choke before redropping into the reesey stuff.

@FAARE FACED:I literally meant cut it out, as in stop it for little breaks then reintroduce it.

I updated the track I posted previously, although I just realised the fucking tapestop bits have triggered in the wrong place and I'm tired to fix them now :x

Also got this brand new track too, pretty much done just tweaks to the mix to do imo...

listening to enter game demo, cool keys/riff/ vox stabs are sweet too, great overall loudness, that glitch stop is sweet, kick bumps everything sounds mixed really well, whole track is solid nicely done!

@misch - sounds pretty damn good man, reminds me alot of noisia. My only complaint is that the main bass seems a bit to far away, maybe try cutting some of the reverb on it or increasing the stereo spread to bring it forward? Great work on this one.

@jclarkeiv - i liked how that drop started but it seemed to sort of fall into randomness and didnt really have a dominant motif to follow. Feeling less programmed is good but there should still be some sort of motif/idea. I would try taking that first 4 bars or so of the drop (which IMO sound pretty tight) and introducing some slight variation on it.

@mthrfnk - i actually had to go listen to the original to be able to tell how much you added, so your mix isnt that bad lol. Your drops sound good, and i can appreciate the funky vibe they have, but not different enough from the original IMO if you are looking to win. Also you cut out some of the best parts of the drops in the orignal (like the part at 2:48). IMO you should work off the part you made @ 2:38, those drums sound pretty sweet - i was wondering how the drop would sound with those drums behind it. Not really typical dubstep rythem but it sounds pretty tight - almost like 140bpm dnb or rock drums. Either way it gives it an original vibe for sure - i am really interested to see what you come up with out of this man.

here is my WIP, would love some feedback!

@ jclarkeiv -
Your drum roll around 0:31, I feel is a bit loud compared to the rest of your mix. I really like your drums throughout the rest of the track though. Another detail I really like is how you pan the squelchy/bouncy bass throughout the mix, good sense of movement here. Around 1:28 I'd try eq-uing some of your basses to make them a little crunchier (that's just my inclination). Right now I feel like the snare has the more snap to it, which isn't a bad thing if that what you're going for. Also, the crash is a little loud, see if you can't get it to sit in the mix a little better. I really dig that high register wobbler you've got panning around, great feel!

@misch –
I agree with npcompl33t. Your track is very reminiscent of Noisia, great sound, but the main bass is definitely getting lost in the mix.
I would try to cut some frequencies to get it to come forward a bit. Also, if you can get those little high frequency accents (sound kind of like electricity shocks to me) to come forward and fade out throughout the mix it could add a bit of movement to your track, play this off of the drums and the main bass and you'll have yourself a filthy epic track!

@npcompl33t -
Very bouncy trance–ish type track. I really dig the part around 0:38 where the plucks come in and you have the portal sample ( :W: for portal references). The Sample is nice and crispy, holds the foreground really well. However, the next sample gets lost in your build. I feel like the part after that build is a little too drawn out with the beeping sounds, the following parts kind of drag out for me, which I guess is normal for a dancy trance song. I really dig the sound around 3:00, its a good contrast to the rest of whats going on behind it. Have you tried layering in some more progressive sounds, change it up a little bit, just to keep the track exciting. I guess the hardest part is keeping a good semi-predictable flow to a track without making it too radically different or too boring. Either way, nice stuff.

My WIP:
Grab your headphones and turn it up!

Almost a cinematic score feel I think. I want to expand this and hopefully make an EP. Kind of stuck on writing the "Meat" of what happens after all those builds and drops. Any and all feedback welcome!

npcompl33t - I like it! It's got a relentless beat and sounds pretty dark! Don't really know what else to say, good job.

Rejinx - a great intro, i'd be interested to hear how the tune turns out. You've got some nice sounds in there!

misch - pretty crazy sounds, but I think you have a bit much reverb. As others have said there's a bit much going on. I like heavy stuff, but usually the bass is the main focus in those tunes, you can hear it clearly.

This is the one I'm working on at the moment, the lyrics don't seem to make any sense but it's for a remix comp and that's what came with it. Any suggestions as to how to make it more interesting would be welcome, also general mixdown opinions - any sounds jumping out too much or sounding out of place?

virtualmark- i think the vocals sound fine, not out of place at all and the track hits pretty hard too :W: , i think the snare could be a little punchier with some more "snap" if that makes sense?

Rejinx, this is awesome, i could see this being an epic intro for a track, awesome atmosphere and tension throughout

Misch, some awesome bass sounds in here for sure, i feel like the reverb on the snare takes up a lot of space though, maybe tone it down a bit the length and wetness so the following kick/bass has more space to punch through

Havent posted anything in awhile but really digging this one

@virtualmark –
I'm digging those crispy claps. Your vocals are sweet. I'm curious, how'd you get that set up? Someone you know lay down some verses for you? Regardless, I'm digging this track, it's got a good, kind of "earlier" (less progressively wild I guess) dubstep feel to it. Reminds me of Flux Pavilion, Dr. P., etc. My only suggestion is to try layering sounds, spreading things out across the stereo field to widen things up with panning or something, just be careful not to get too muddy. Diggin' it, good stuff!

@ Subflex (epic name btw) –
I freaking love that dirty reese you have going on, it feels great. I'd layer it with some other sounds, try to play it off some counteracting sounds to get a responsive groove type feel. You could also try playing with some filter/eq modulation to get it to poke forward during your glidy bits. I feel like your plucky lead with the filter delay (sounds like filter delay) is kind of bright in comparison to the rest of the track which is good for contrast, however, it might benefit from some change every 4-8 bars or so, just to keep it fresh. Anyhow, keep it coming, big sound!

Third feedback would go here if more people had posted.

I updated my track, it's not a huge change but I'm always looking for feedback. It's still very much unfinished, even so I've decided to submit it as a demo to OWSLA, I wonder if they'll like it. I'm definitely doing a 4 track EP, it'll be some time because I'm finishing college in May etc. Portfolio building, job hunting stuff. So keep an eye out if you like what you hear, and as always THANK YOU!

Rej-

to be honest im trying to get away from the "glitchy" spastic type stuff. I still like some of it, but ive been on a darker kick lately and the super high-energy glitchy stuff where its bouncing between 5 different sounds in 2 bars idk just not my thing lol. thanks though I appreciate the compliments :W: , ive been working on reeses a lot lately and like where its going. My main concern is the mixdown, kinda at that point where ive listened to it a billion times and hard to listen objectively in terms of the mixdown. and yea i have a thing for big bright plucky synths haha, they jus do it for me... somehow they make it into every tune :lol:

i listened to this one, which part did you update?
and is this how you sent it in as a demo, just this clip?

Thanks! The vocals are from the stems - it's for a remix comp. I like doing these as it gives me something to work with and helps me learn music and song structure a bit better.

Yeah I know this feeling. I try to make a track in a few hours now, but like you say after listening for a long time I can't even tell if it's any good or not. I do like this thread, it's very useful to get some feedback.

I would love to give some good feedback on the tracks above. But i have to say i cant find anything to give feedback on other then it all sounds awesome! Im a beginner at this, but i would love if one or two of you could give some feedback. Im pretty stuck at this track, and i never manage to finish a full track without copy/paste parts to make it a full song, wich usually gets makes a pretty boring tune= / So any tips on that would be super!

Cheers guys!

Udyret - I know how you feel! I listen to some tracks and just think they sound good, so it's hard to say how to improve them.

TBH your tune isn't bad for a first attempt. My main advice would be to keep at it, you'll notice yourself improving when you compare newer tunes with old ones. I listen to my older stuff and wonder what I was thinking at the time!

Subflex - I really like this tune! The melodies are nice and the mixdown is clear. The only think I'd change a bit would be maybe to get a bit of movement in the bass at some points. But that's more of a creative choice than a mixdown one, it's still a good tune!

Rejinx- Mate, OWSLA wouldn't sign you off the back of whats essentially a big intro! its very good and well produced, but get onto the main section, thats where the important part is for this stuff. really good production values so far though, listen to koven- more than you, mojo- blues (i think, could have mixed it up with another one hes done) for an example of some interesting and original main sections. keep at it!

Subflex- nice little tune, i do feel that the bassline and the leads dont compliment each other too weell, but thats just me. kick and snare could be a little bigger sounding, and your percs need to stand out a little bit more in the mix for me, polished overall production but needs a bit more sparkle imo.

virtualmark- i think that your main basslines dont have enough impact, they sound good but just a bit weak, they beefing up a bit i think, they've really got to fucking hit you round the head in this kind of tune. snare could punch through a little bit more too, maybe try layering it with a clap or something. vocal fits the mood of the song well, doesnt matter if it doesnt make sense as long as it sounds good!

Soundcloud

my tunes seem to be really different to the general style on here, ah well be nice!

@Cheeky - Intro is super smooth. Love the keys and the pads :W: Drop transitioned really nice, the whole track has this great oldschool sound to it and the vocals really sound great. Awesome stuff. The only complaint I have is that the kick and snare sound very... er, low passed? They just a bit muffled, loud enough in the mix but they sound muffled.

@Rejinx - Not my style but sounds pretty nice so far! To me, it sounds like it'd make a kick ass intro to someones set.

@Subflex - Nice! Sub groove is really smooth and all your synths work really good together. Your main bassline synth is super sick. I would layer that clap with a snare just for a bit more punch in your beat.

@VirtualMark - That drop is heavy as hell man. Your synths are really fat! Your mix is also clear as hell. Good stuff.

@ncompl33t - Not my style but the mix is clear and the track has a smooth groove.

Heres my newest track im working on:
