How do people feel about reusing sounds?

Post by Benji » Fri Apr 12, 2013 5:00 pm

Like for example, if you made a bass or lead you particularly like, would you ever use the sound in another song? I try to stay away from doing that but I generally load a preset I've made that has the most similar sound as a starting point, but I don't think it ever ends up recognisable. I'm not always sure where to draw the line between laziness and convenience with things like that

No big deal. Everyone does it. If it's really unique it helps you establish your sound.

I use the same reese as a starting point. I use differences in resampling or change the sound design a tad. Using 'the same' patch over and over again is what develops your personal sound. I often use the same samples again, to give listeners a familiar feel when listening to my tunes. Often the same drum samples too, but good ones are hard to come by.

Ive got a couple of risers and pads i reuse often, but never in quite the same way. Ill usually stretch them a little or add a little FX that i didnt have in another project.

Do it! Who cares what people think! Most of our favorite producers do! It's obvious because it either sounds exactly the same or 95% similar. I wouldn't reuse the same sound in the same way more than a few times in serious productions, or for a staring point :D
I spend a decent amount of time on sound design and am proud of what I make.

Bottomline: A piano player uses the same instrument every time! They just manipulate it! It's part of being an artist.
But... If tou use the same sound all the time or in a lot of your songs, either people really love that sound and want to hear it more or they will hate it because they think you were bein lazy.

I use the same drum rack for everything. That being said, it's got 9 kicks, 8 snares, 3 claps, 9 hihats, 2 crashes, 3 shakers, a slap, a tambourine, a triangle, and a ride bell.

Lots of really good replies, cheers for that. When I used to be in and out of metal bands, no one ever mentioned that I generally used the same guitar tone but I guess I assumed that people wouldn't be as lenient with electronic music

Yeahhh, can be a bit bait if it's a preset or stock sample. But if it's something unique then I'm all for it, signature sounds ftw and all that

If you make a patch & save it - then i guess you feel in your own mind that it is worth using again.

recently i made a drum rack that i am gonna fill with kicks/snares w/e that i layered/ processed - can always re-use em.

I have a standard patch in ableton for samples that splits octaves & has some useful macro controls/ so quick to make sounds with it.

I guess I am using the same patch but with different sounds.

I've always found sampels are a good base .
So if the base is perfect keep building on it =)

A lot of artists will create a signature bass, then reuse that bass in every track they create, but they will change certain characteristics and timbres of the sound.

Preditah does it, so does Burger Boy (big Birmingham 4x4 producer) and many others who I can't be bothered to type out. Creating a signature sound is what makes many artists big, as their sound can be heard in everything they do.

The way I see it is a band, like the Beatles, used the same drums and hardware throughout their career - the majority of the time, as do many smaller bands. Yet they produce unique tracks every time. Are they penalised by the regular fans for using the same guitar in all their music? Nobody notices or cares because it's the music they enjoy, and the talent.

There are no rules to music. It's an art form.

coki and bassnectar come to mind as having very, very, VERY similar sounds in all their songs.

I used to think that this was a bad idea, but in retrospect it was because I had never really made anything truly "awesome", until 2 days ago. Check the track in my signature. The growls in the 2nd part of the track, are some of the best I've heard anywhere (obviously that's subjective), but I can honestly see myself using them again, personally cos I god damn well love the sound.

So no - now I don't think it's so bad - and in some cases, required (as stated previously) to establish your own style.
160 bpm roller - for all the skankas.
