MUST DIE!/Skrillex - Mid range pluck

Post by Planet V » Tue Mar 12, 2013 5:39 am

Hey guys, I am relatively new to these forums, but i've been producing for about 3 years now.

I've been working on this sound that I've been hearing more and more of lately, and quite frankly, this sound i so off the hook i can't help but try to recreate it.

Soundcloud

Its the kind of mid/high range pluck with tons of reverb and some serious filter envs used at 0:45 and so on.

Skrillex's also uses it in art of raw around 0:49, and so on.

Soundcloud

How would you guys go about creating this sound? or something similar? In terms of wave forms, filter types/envelope parameters and distortion types as well as punchy compression etc...
Just trying to get a rough idea, I've spent a good 3 hours trying to get something close, and so far i haven't yielded too much of a result, I've been thinking multi-saw with tons of motion through the waveform to create a really detuned sound, and some comb filters with a flanger and some digital distortion (bitcrushing) to give it that rugged feel.

Any suggestions are apprciated :) thank you in advance for your time!

2 sine waves, one two octaves up, the other one two octaves down (48 semitones apart from eachother)
then basically distort after taste
if you use massive: Parabolic shaper with both knobs on full, tele tube with dry wet at around 70% and drive at like 70-80%, scream filter with scream on 25%, resonance at 25% and the scream depends on what notes you play, but imo it sounds best at like 65%
WT position 1 all the way to the right, Wt position 2 all the way to the left

Pretty much this.

Although that first track just sounds like they sampled it out of a Skrillex track tbh.

Thanks for the reply Eskimo! its greatly appreciated, I don't use massive normally, but dusted it off and tried out your settings, and with a few tweeks i got something close to my liking, although normally i use reason 5 which doesnt support massive, but ill be sure to keep that around for further dwellings with FL and cubase.

If anyone else if wondering how to achieve this sound in R5 i was rather successful with the following:
a malstrom with osc a on a 16x saw, and osc 2 on a 4x saw, osc a pitched up 2 octaves with a slight reduction in shift. Play with the amp envs to achieve a sound to your liking, i found a moderate release time did some decent work. some lowpass filtering to take out the highs and a bit of eqing to contrast that. I also found using a modulator to drop the lowpasses gave it that crisp round release, try messing with that. Then some tape and overdrive distortion with low damage control and fairly high tone on the OD and high speed and compression on the tape. pump some resonance out of the overdrive and pull out the lows and highs on the cuts for both to achieve the pulled back mid sound, then simply a flanger with like 10 delay and negative feedback (although you dont really need this, it just changes the sound a tad), and of course tons of reverb.

Thanks again dude!

The bulk of the sound is from pitch modulation. Fast attack or fast decay

This will probably get you close but a lot of it is envelope on the pitch
