It's Bitwig - designed by some of the original programmers from Ableton, that's why it looks so similar. And the main thing here is that they've added drag and drop modulation - like in Massive and Synth Squad. Far better for working on a computer IMO.

It may be early days yet, but by the looks of things it'll do everything Ableton does and a hell of a lot more.

I honestly at first saw Bitwig as just a DAW that you have only limited # of things to do. Then, I looked into it, and man, am I stoked! Anybody have absolutely any idea when they'll release it and whether or not it's open source?

I honestly at first saw Bitwig as just a DAW that you have only limited # of things to do. Then, I looked into it, and man, am I stoked! Anybody have absolutely any idea when they'll release it and whether or not it's open source?

Not sure how lfo's are set up in other daws, but I think I prefer picking parameters from a list in Renoise to this drag and drop stuff. It might be because I'm using a trackpad and I use the keyboard as much as I can. I would prefer moving the cursor less.

jesus fuck that is ugly. But now that I have spent the $$$ on reason 4, ableton suite 8, and komplete 6, I don't really see myself switching daw's just for drag and drop automation.

Bitwig is pretty cool, I've used a beta and it can be ran in your browser, has a live chat and can invite people in your project so you can work on it together and other goodies not really something I would give up my main DAW but nice to use for collab projects and on the go

Also renoise is pretty easy to learn, any tracker really and has some amazing things about it, I used to make breakcore beats in renoise and export them because of the amazing way of using FX like glitch and stretch, they've done some serious updates since I've used it and is a real competitor today, not to mention its great community

haha, usually my stuff doesn't have nearly as much use of the different renoise pattern commands. I don't know all of them off the top of my head either, so I might take a look at a reference pdf I have or I take a guess.
Those orange numbers are pitch bend commands. 01xx is pitch bend up, 02xx is pitch bend down. All of that stuff in the top right corner that says percs, tambourines, bass, etc are sample instruments. The blue numbers on the right side of the tracks are 09xx commands that change where the sample start is(can't put an lfo on that , I'm not big on 09xx commands) The green numbers are velocities, the blue numbers are delay values so you can go in between the lines(off the grid) and the C-50A, C-509, etc are the note and instrument. You enter the edit mode by pressing esc and then you can type in the notes on your keyboard or midi controller. This is how trackers differ from piano rolls where you click the notes in and adjust velocities as bars or whatever(my limited experience with piano roll comes mostly from FL).
What I didn't mention yet was how they are way better than piano rolls. You see that box that says Editstep and has a value of 01? That means that when you enter in a note or hit the delete key, the position you are at for editing moves down one line. So if you load up an 808 hi hat and have the octave at 04, you can hold down the 'Z' key(middle c) and boom! Instant trap hi hat loop.
Using the keyboard to enter in notes, alternating between the notes and the delete key to skip spaces, I can tap out beats much faster than I've seen anyone do with piano roll.

Bitwig looks good. I dont like the way ableton/bitwig look - but really like abletons functionality so I guess bitwig will be good too.

Yeah definitely not open source. They've made it known that they intend to charge for licenses. A good, open-source linux-based DAW is Ardour, though. Ardour is advancing rapidly in terms of its capability.

EDIT: It appears that Ardour now costs money for prepackaged versions. If you want it free, you have to compile it yourself.

I am going to have to try the demo and I'll be looking for feedback from others. It is going to take a bit to lure me away from Live, which I've been using since Live 4. I'm still on Live 8 at the moment but the upgrade to Live 9 Suite is $299 compared to the $399 for Bitwig. I do think it's pretty cool that it has Linux support although I am sure that my audio interfaces do not have Linux drivers. I could be wrong, I haven't really looked into it. Have not had a reason to yet.

Seems really pricey for a newcomer to the DAW market. The interface looks like a mashup of Ableton/Cubase/Logic. I wonder how much its going to be priced for the UK market.
