If it's purely for listening and you never see it being used for djing I have got genuinely good turntables from this second hand hi fi store (literally sells nothing else apart from hi-fis and records) for not much cash so honestly second hand I think will honestly be the way to go as unless you're willing to part with serious money a new turntable for the same price will probably be pretty rubbish.
going to say the same. if its for home listening, there are better buys then technics

there is, yeah... but really? reaaaally? would you really bother?

my mk2 is like 22 years old i think and my mk5 is about 8 i think and bar a bit of wear and tear, you can't differentiate between the 2 bar the pitch ball bearing.

i imagine you'd drop a cool half dozen sheets on an audiophile one and then some dick leans on it and it's all out of balance and shit.

:t:

Like I said, I had one when I was a kid, but I think the last thing I bought on vinyl was K7 - Come Baby Come! I've got Betty Boo's first album, M-Beat - Incredible and a copy of Madonna - True Blue somewhere too.

Since I got a CD player for my 13th birthday I've just never really found a good enough reason to go back, especially once I could back up all my stuff to mp3 at decent quality and since I've never really had any pretensions of being a DJ. When I finally caved and decided I needed some sort of DJ setup, I went for CDJs because I couldn't really shell out for Serato as well as two decks and a mixer and I wasn't about to try and restart my music collection when it stood at around 30,000 legally bought tunes! I think the only time I really felt like I'd missed out was when I couldn't buy Moth/Wolf Cub.

It's only really now that I've started collecting old soul and jazz that I've found that having a record player would make things a whoooole lot easier!

Be prepared to spend an unnecessary amount on vinyls.

Yeah although saying that if you buy a real nice cartridge for 1200s/1210s they can sound fucking good still and they are built like tanks

Not necessarily
afaik direct drive are only really necessary for mixing and scratching. If all you're going to be doing is playing records then belt drive will be fine. Alot of high quality hi fi turtables are belt drive.

technics are pricey, if you want like half the price and at least half decent quality, look at a couple of the midlevel stanton models

If you're going to look at Stanton look at the top-level ones imo. Anything other than the ST150, from my experience, are pretty poor. Pitch-drifting, poor build quality etc. I got a pair of ST150's with a mixer for $700, which was too good a price to turn down. They are certainly comparable to Technics 1210/1200 but if I had infinite money I certainly would have gone for 1210s, there's a reason they're industry standard. The build quality in the ST150's is inconsistent - plastic light mountings that break very easily, quite tacky... but on the other hand the actual chassis is like a tank. I dropped one once, in its cardboard box, no damage whatsoever.

I just wanted a player for home listening cos the last one fell apart
& I was in your quandary about value without excessive cost

the local vinyl shop had imported a bunch of Audio Technicas suited to anything
they have good level of speed/switching/weighting controls without being obsessive
I'm very happy with it...cost about $400
(but our prices are ridiculous compared to yours, so I'd think around 120 quid there)
rigged it up to an old (1968?) Sansui valve amp which I had reconditioned for $50,
& new, good quality but not too-compact speakers ($400)
(after being disuaded from investing in snazzy old ones - big bucks for good condition)
fitted some new lengths of cable
and it's fine apart from the real low end at above 5 volume, which the amp can't handle too well

up to now I've spent about $880
eventually I'll get an amp that can hold lofreqs better + a sub

Warning, once you've got it, you'll be buying heaps more vinyl.

oh yeah, I've hooked up stand-alone cassette & CD players to the amp too.

and yeah the old jazz I'm also collecting, sounds better than anything else apart from Tolerance's Chamber of Secrets
