In Denmark, from where the bricks originate, they are called "Lego-klodser" = Lego bricks.
And LEGO is an abbreviation of "LEg GOdt", which means "play well".

its technically "lego bricks"
but there are so many lego pieces that are not bricks
platforms, planks, small cylinders, those transparent neon yellow laser-looking tip things, hinges, wheels, people/body parts

The word LEGO® is a brand name and is very special to all of us in the LEGO Group Companies. We would sincerely like your help in keeping it special. Please always refer to our bricks as 'LEGO Bricks or Toys' and not 'LEGOS.' By doing so, you will be helping to protect and preserve a brand of which we are very proud and that stands for quality the world over. Thank you!"
As a personal note, I think it would also be appropriate to call them "LEGO pieces", or "LEGO components", in addition to "LEGO Bricks or Toys"

Thanks for getting in touch with us.
It's great to hear that our bricks are inspiring your niece!
Actually, the correct pluralization of our product is LEGO® bricks, LEGO sets, or LEGO minifigures. The trademark itself is not pluralized, the object it is attached to is.
I hope this information is helpful! Please wish her the best of luck with her project from all of us here at The LEGO Group.
Thanks again for getting in touch. We're always pleased to receive feedback from LEGO fans! If you could take a moment to complete a four question survey by going to the link below, it will help us make sure we are providing the best customer service to you.
Happy building!
