I suppose it all depends on what you're trying to get out of music. If your goal is to get free drinks and make girls think you're cool then this is probably useful. If your goal is to produce good music, to reach people and make something they enjoy, then this probably doesn't help you.
Morally I think it's a matter of degree. I know I'd like to make great tunes and have millions of people love them spontaneously, without me pushing them at all, but I also know that's not realistic. I work for a booking agency and I know how much promotion you have to do even for good music. This isn't really that different in its actual effect than paying Google to be at the top of the search results: buying thousands of fake likes just makes you more visible to real people. No matter how many fake likes you buy, you're still relying on real people to buy your tunes or pay the cover at the clubs you're playing, so your music has to be at least not bad for this strategy to pay off.

I don't really see the problem with the producer's behaviour in the article, it's another form of self promotion. I've often seen a track covered in comments and curiously had a listen, i can't tell you a single one of those tracks tho. The problem lies in the way in which soundcloud works, i don't really understand people's obsessions with followers and plays etc... Some fellow producers constantly worry about their comments/fav counts but in all honesty how many of those people are willing to buy your music or pay to hear you play out? You should aim to get your track noticed by one or two of the right people instead of 1000s of the general mob.

I did the research. It's not this dope solution guy. I posted it in the article, but incase anyone misses it, I found the actual guy called "Louie" this article is talking about.

i dont agree with fake bot followers, however i admit iv followed a lot of people on soundcloud in the past month.. but its only because iv been doing music most of my life, not earned a penny from it and i can't seem to get any job. i try my best with my music but i was sometimes getting 4 or 5 views a day regardless of how many hours i spent on my uploads.
everyone has their reasons for doing these things, most people will think its bullshit but tbh i wouldn't have stooped so low if i didnt have a lot of problems in life, i am glad i did it though it changed a lot of things & the confidence boost has helped me complete songs and not give up everything like i used to.

I've had a lot of fake spam bot followers lately through no fault of my own. There seems to be an increase in fake profiles - they usually have a name like user123456 and have a picture of a woman, along with a link to some webcam site.
WTF is going on with Soundcloud lately? They need to implement some anti spam measures.

Yeah I just got this one today. Doesn't really seem like a very effective way of advertising your porn site.VirtualMark wrote:I've had a lot of fake spam bot followers lately through no fault of my own. I got this message on Soundcloud. Looks like the likes are real people rather than robots.

Hi Dj
How's it going Dj
I checked out some of your tracks. Very well done. I heard some great skills. My fav. one is Machine GunJust worldclass Dj
Why dont you promote your tracks?! I mean they just could look much more exciting if you have some more likes or plays and so on. Its just an idea how to
provide u a tiny boost, especially for new tunes, to be more recognized.
simply because I appreciated your tracks!
Check out this page: promosoundcloud com and give it a go if u like the idea.
Anyway, keep your music up Dj.
peace

Was reading this thread, but had stop here. This statement is patently false. That is exactly what marketing is.wub wrote:Gravehill wrote:Pretty much any serious musician is going to spend money on some sort of advertising/marketing at some point.
Advertising & marketing =/= buying followers, likes & plays
Let's see how the rest of this thread goes.

Hello DJ? You been sampling Madonna?
Re: How to Become a SoundCloud Superstar, One Fake Fan at a
Definitely a good idea if you have music of a decent quality and some spare cash to spend
More hits in the past = higher chance of your music getting more traffic in the future thanks to the way the internet works (you will be higher in google searches + more likely to pop up on others soundcloud recommendations etc)
There is so much music available on the internet right now that anything to help you get noticed would be invaluable
With that said you always run the risk of being instantly ignored/judged if someone suspects you have just bought followers (this will probably happen sometime soon)
For an upcoming artist I would rather spend my $$ on better equipment or digital artwork (such as a logo/album designs etc)
I think sending songs to other producers and DJs and trying to attract that crowd first would probably be more effective in less mainstream genres (after all these are the guys that are going to be the guys that will book you for a show... if not be good friends with those guys)
slightly off topic
just finished my marketing degree wooo

the only good bot is a starkbot
Re: How to Become a SoundCloud Superstar, One Fake Fan at a
It must be a pretty hollow feeling to have 20 000 plays on a track and know that no one actually listened to it. I guess its about doing what you are comfortable with at the end of the day, kind of like the way you sample, or using loops, or promoting products/events.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget.
Re: How to Become a SoundCloud Superstar, One Fake Fan at a
i think stuff like this just proves how stupid a lot of people are,
I mean in the article it says that the guy got onto the beatport charts by doing this- ie. people bought the tune. Anyone who goes into beatport and just buys tunes which has loads of plays on soundcloud deserves to listen to terrible music imo

Re: How to Become a SoundCloud Superstar, One Fake Fan at a
Some DJs are booked solely to play top 20 EDM bangers at commercial clubs, so it would make sense for them to just buy what is popular, I guess.hutyluty wrote:I mean in the article it says that the guy got onto the beatport charts by doing this- ie. people bought the tune.
