Deeper Kicks

Post by bodom418 » Tue Apr 23, 2013 6:53 pm

Hey guys,

Been digging a lot of the older, deeper stuff lately and enjoying trying out some new songs in that vein. I'm used to producing the more modern, aggressive stuff, and my main trouble spot so far has been the kick. Naturally, I'm trying to start with good samples, and I've got no shortage to choose from... But I'm still lacking the general process of achieving this sound. Something along the lines of...

Everything I do ends up having too much of the high-end "click"; that sort of kick almost as well suited for metal. So any advice or links are appreciated.

Cheers

Get a 909 kick and some breaks and just pitch the 909 up until it hits somewhere from 80 to 100 hz, then remove the high end of that kick and layer in the kick of the break (or any sample you like) to taste. Always gives me good results and meshes really well with a sub underneath.

You can take ANY kick, with a heavy low-end, and just roll off some of the high-end. Easy shit.
160 bpm roller - for all the skankas.

kick in ops tune sounds like a decent quality kick from one of those deep house / electro / bla bla bla loopmasters or primeloops sample packs with the clicky 1khz~2khz notched out and the sub tail tamed and distorted a bit.

Yeah, I tried just rolling off the highs on a handful of my go-to kicks, but it was always just... weird haha. Anyway, I got a pretty satisfying result with Genevieve's method.

You're right! 909s are just the nicest low-end wise to me :0
