Anyone producing on a touchscreen?

Post by Simulant » Tue Apr 23, 2013 4:29 pm

I've noticed a few recent developments with touchscreen and DAWs, just wondered if anyone here is using touch yet? Do you think this is the future of production or just a fad?

Personally I prefer a mouse and keyboard, but I can imagine touch has some pros and cons - I like the idea of more hands on stuff, but don't want to sit with my arms out in front of me for hours.

Yes... well, actually it's an iPhone - but it's become my main musical idea notepad. And yes, there are good parts and bad parts. Touchscreens are more "playable" than QWERTY keyboards, but until they get velocity sensitivity it's still pretty limited. I think gesture-based playability is a more interesting avenue to explore.

I have 2 iPads that I sometimes use. One with my full daw it and the other with a mixer or some controls. Comes in handy when I'm recoding guitar. That way I'm not sitting at my desk.

I use touchosc and the livecontrol template to control abelton sometimes int he studio. I imagine for tracking a real band it would be super handy to hve the DAW anywhere in the room/house lol sometimes drums end up in some wierd places for DIY recording sessions.

I like to be able and watch the metering of things while in still in arrangment view. Easy soloing is nice too, but its not a main stay of my workflow yet.

Well, I produced JUST on my iPad2 for a whole year. I really enjoyed it, but it feels more natural to me to use a mouse, although it was fun using the touchscreen to record melodies/basslines.

If I could afford a proper touchscreen, I might. I think there's been some talk about using Wacom's CintiQ touch as a controller.

Video doesn't really show shit, but apparently these guys are able to create textures on touchscreens.

If it actually works, touchscreens may be very interesting to work with
