What's the point of quite meaning really- there's already so many words like that.

It's widely used in both senses in British English. Jesus, have none of you Brits ever watched a Sherlock Holmes film?

The 'American' (just for the matter of clarity) meaning is the dictionary definition.
The 'British' meaning is more of a colloquialism. It all depends on the inflection.
