Re: What laptops do you use
15" Macbook Pro (Mid 2010)
2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo
4Gb ram
500Gb harddrive
I paid a hefty $2400 new and its still kicking ass on its orignal install and everything 3+ years later.
I have an SSD to swap into it once i finish a few recent projects, clean Mountain Lion install with the SSD and maybe 8Gb ram just to stretch the machine a few more years and make sure i can keep up with the new kids on the block.
When i do need a new laptop it will be another Macbook Pro for sure, this thing takes everything i throw at it with 0 issues or complaints.

Until Mac cuts their retail prices by at least 1/3 no one is ever going to convince me it's worth the money. I've never had stability or major system issues since Windows 2000/XP. I have a kick ass desktop and a decent laptop for 1K less than some of you paid for those mac books! ;p
Really, really not trying to start a mac/PC battle...just saying...I've used macs and I don't see the appeal.

SSD's have just come down in price a lot - you can get a 1Tb SSD now for about £500.
Also - in June, Intel is releasing their new CPU, Haswell. It offers reduced power consumption and faster processing, personally I'm holding out my upgrade until then.

Interesting, perhaps I'll build a new system in the fall then ...VirtualMark wrote:SSD's have just come down in price a lot - you can get a 1Tb SSD now for about £500.

Really? Every year? Shit, I'd switch to Mac too if that was my experience, lol. The worst thing that has ever happened to me is component failure because I ran the thing to death over 3-4 years.Crimsonghost wrote:I used to be PC and every year like clockwork id have to rebuild. To be fair, I do know a lot of people with new, but shitty PCs. Especially in the laptop department. All I have to say is ASUS...ASUS all day long.

Yeah, I recently switched from a shitty old Toshiba to a new ASUS ultrabook that I got for about $530. I don't have a single complaint so far, thing runs like a champ.fragments wrote:Really? Re: What laptops do you use
Desktops are generally much more suited for any serious work. If I had to pick a laptop for music production, I'd go with something by Toshiba or ASUS. Their products are built like tanks.

@ those saying mac is priced too high. while i agree, nothing else compares on the market as far as laptops. i've used a lot of different laptops and nothing touches my macbook pro in my opinion of coarse.
as for a desktop, i built a hackintosh because a desktop is a desktop and you can use whatever peripherals that you choose.

Re: What laptops do you use
It depends what you mean by nothing touches it. If we're talking performance - there's plenty of PC laptops that will stomp all over it, and obviously PC's leave it in the dust when we take price/performance ratios into account. But if we're talking build quality, then the MBP is probably the most well made laptop on the market. That one piece aluminium chassis is classy, as far as I know there's no PC laptops that come close to this. A few have tried, but for the most part, PC laptops are plastic.Eat Bass wrote:@ those saying mac is priced too high. while i agree, nothing else compares on the market as far as laptops. i've used a lot of different laptops and nothing touches my macbook pro in my opinion of coarse.
To be honest, I've been thinking of getting a Mac mainly due to the build quality. Also due to the fact that Windows 8 is a joke, I don't really want my laptop resembling a giant smartphone. At least Apple are still supporting their mouse/touchpad customers!
The only Mac I don't like is the new Retina model. It's a total waste of time for anyone who isn't doing intense graphics work. The screen uses more power, is less bright and the whole thing feels sluggish, as it upscalesthen downscales pretty much everything. Plus you can't change the battery - it's built inside the new MBP, and you're talking a couple of thousand ££s minimum.
I'll wait until June, apparently Apple might also be releasing new models with the new Haswell chips in too, I'd like to see what's available before deciding. There's also a chance they may mention Logic Pro 10 or X.

Yeah. I did that about 3 times. Granted I was doing a lot of gaming. But still, shit adds up.
I do like the ASUS stuff. My wife's work laptop is a Lenovo and I couldn't even recommend that thing to wipe your ass with. Completely useless.

Nice to know someone has a similar setup and is still on the core 2 duo processorblinx wrote:15" Macbook Pro (Mid 2010)

Heres mine
2.8 ghz Core 2 duo macbook pro 15"
4gb ram
128 gb ssd
500gb hdd in optical bay
When it chokes, I just have to remind myself that people were making choons on older machines and to work more efficiently
Re: What laptops do you use
My PC's shit the bed a lot. They crashed a lot. Then I got a Mac Mini and have rocked that bitch for almost 4 years with no troubles. Best $500 I ever spent! I'd love to get a Macbook. Soon.
Re: What laptops do you use
im talking build quality and the performance of the software. for some reason osx seems to make more out of less compared to windows IMO. but yeah when i buy a laptop build quality and things like the trackpad are very important to me and apple has nailed it. however, on the pc side, these attributes dont really matter as the unit will just be sitting in one spot and you can pick your own peripherals anyway. so thats why i build my own PC and turned it into a hackintoshVirtualMark wrote:It depends what you mean by nothing touches it.
