BBC 1Xtra being crap

They've axed DJ Flight's drum and bass show (the best combination of diverse and top quality DnB selection on the station).

But something else- where's the dubstep? Isn't it about time there's a dubstep show on the station?

maybe i'm wrong, but i think one of the problems is there's no real champions for the sound amongst the production staff at 1Xtra. it may be something as simple as no one is pushing internally for it.

then again, they have very high presenting/broadcast standards and with the charter, a complex set of criterion as to who they hire or try to appeal to, so they may just not have found the right DJ.

all that said, i still think they're sorely missing a dubstep show.

given the problems they've had with representing grime and how they've over compensated with d&b, i think a dubstep show would be of real benefit to them. sure there was a time when you could have said dubstep was too niche and london centric for a national broadcaster, but that just isn't the case anymore... take one look at the national and international events section of this forum or see how Boy Betta Know and EZ are battering Coki & Benga's "Night."

It has always been a highly elitist system anyway.

Imagine a concept where a supposedly national radio station developed for the community in general is only available to those with a digital radio, sattelite TV, Cable TV, or internet connection.

I for one have never been able to listen to it in my own home, and I've actually APPEARED on tha damn ting (unpaid, of course )
Neither do most of the people I know have access to it.

Okay, you CAN get it on the WEB, I'm assuming. But who wants to listen it on the useless laptop speakers or computer speaker systems most people have. we want in on tha HIFI, or at work (i.e. building site e.t.c.) on tha portable radio.

And who wants to have the TV on some blank screen rubbish in order to listen to tha radio? We want to have the TV picture ON and listen to tha radio!!! What kind of PROGRESS do they call that

Sort of. It does seem like they are trying a bit hard to be "right-on", New Urban Music could have done, although I suppose the term 'Urban' might have other connotations.

I always have problems with racial labels being dumped onto diverse music scenes. I mean, modern hip-hop, grime, RnB, DnB is a fair mix of black, white, asian, men, women, whatever other categories you like. Fair enough, the origins may lie more with black music than white, but its not a fair reflection of the 'now'.

That aside, 1xtra could do with some dubstep representation. Someone with banter. Not sure how n-type would go down though!

in defence of 1Xtra, this was a situation was imposed upon them, not one they chose. With the analog to digital radio switch over in coming, i dont think people are getting pieces of the FM spectrum anymore.

Soon everything (except the pirates... discuss!) will be on digital, so 1Xtra wont be at a disadvantage anymore.

Why do you think the TV licence is bullshit? Am I being very naive in thinking that this is where the majority of the funding comes from and that without it we would have adverts on BBC channels or no BBC at all?

Always thought the 'Black Music' thing was jsut stupid when it started and I was listening to DnB. I mean, so drum and bass was for black people? Made only by black people?

It just reaked of BBC trying to get IN with underground crowds; a bit like brands suddenly advertising through graffiti and skateboarding - it sucked.

i hate the word 'URBAN' but even jus 'NEW URBAN MUSIC' would be better.

everyone knows that dancehall, roots, reggae, bashment etc etc originates from black culture, but is there really a need to advertise it in such an in your face kinda way ..... people know and respect its origins, no need for that tagline man ....

Say what you like about the BBC, it has many flaws, but is still produces some truly excellent programmes and has a very supportive influence on the cultural life of this country.

Expensive period dramas it can flog to the states, reality tv, turgid soaps, aspirational programmes for rich, middle class folks.

I like the idea of the BBC but it's pretty much degraded to the level of commercial tv over the last few years. Probably a couple of hours of anything worth watching in an entire week is fairly shite to my mind.

1xtra do need to drop the "New Music -Black People" slogan....

Otherwise they were on point for a while, Live Broadcast from Sidewinder events.

I remember I went to a 1xtra party with Plastician, and it was very well organised, and of course rammo. Since then (2005), its not been as interesting.

Its certainly slipping at the moment......although i do think adding a dubstep show would resolve this immediately.

Speculation only from me but this could be more down to the difficulty in getting an FM licence more than anything. Maybe the BBC are deemed to have too many (mind you, they could go for AM but that would be crap sound quality).

Also, analogue is slowly on its way out...few more years and we'll all be digital.

That said, 1xtra is a pile of steaming horsepoo.
