dubstep drums vs. hiphop drums

Post by lilt » Thu Sep 06, 2007 10:27 am

heya...

ive just started producing some dubstep but im having some trouble getting the right feel to the drum loops
all the loops i program end up sounding like they would be great for some hiphop but dont have the same 'bouncey' offbeat that dubstep drums do

is this a common problem (or is it just me)?

could somebody maybe post up a very basic dubstep drum loop in midi so i can see where im going wrong?

try to put your snare hits either anticipating the 3 beat or on the '&' of three... put some of your kicks on the 'e's of the beats.. not that this clears things up.. but getting playful with syncopation is helpful

listen to 2-step also

if anything bring the fuckin hiphop drums! i feel mala has been using hiphop styled drums in his productions lately and they sound well good, something which can definetly be used more i reckon..

thanks all for the advice =)
especially for the midi loops! i will check them out later in the day

i totally get where you are coming form ozols man... there are a lot of 'generic' sounding dubstep tracks around and laying out some hiphop drums in a dubstep track is a great way to get away from that

but for my first goes at 'dubstep' im trying to get the hang of making some generic tracks to see where its at before i start mixing it up

i think the track i have made i will just give to my brother who is a rapper he will appreciate it... hiphop drums + dubstep wobbly bass = coolness

will post up my hiphop drum loop later as well so you guys can catch where im at =)

doesnt sound as good without the wobble bass with it
i realised i shouldnt be putting the emphasis on the starting kick drums
