drums or bass?

Post by zosomagik » Tue May 07, 2013 4:12 pm

which do you start with and why? i know there are probably a million threads on this because its a pretty popular question but im just looking for some fresh insight. i personally start with drums but as ive gotten better im pretty sure its really starting to limit my creativity with my basslines. i think the next few tracks i make im just gonna start with bass.

Doesnt matter.

Sometimes make beats for a bass, sometimes make bass to match beats. Whichever is more crucial to the sound of your track, make stuff work with it. Sometimes however it is easier to come up with a bassline when there is a beat.

Yeah I feel ya. I've been making a lot of flying lotus influenced stuff lately and for that I definitely start with drums but I'm gonna start trying to use basslines first for like dub and glitch hop stuff

But yeah I use a vst emulation of one.

If you can get a groove laid down without even tracking drums or bass yet, it's cakesauce to top it off with the rhythm section.

yeah thats what im sayin. i feel like it would be so much easier to just slap some drums over an already groovin bassline, but ive always started with drums cause you get an instant groove where as basslines take a bit longer to construct. but im definitely gonna try to switch it up for my next few tracks and see how i like the difference.

I usually make a couple 2 or 4 bar drum loops that I have just sitting around and playing in the background while I design basses, leads, pads, etc. Once I've got a bass or lead that I really like, I'll lay out a basic arrangement, choose a drum loop, and build everything else from there. I've tried to lay out all of the drums for a track before and it just doesn't work. I have to construct the entire intro before I move on to the first verse, before I move onto the second verse, etc.

make sure you don't do both drums and bass.

if you do you will need to go up to 160 bpm.

At least for actual keys sounds as opposed to bass.

Usually the drums-sub-atmos/pads-basses depends though
