I actually first saw this info on that crap Bang goes the Theory show. An expert produced some credible information, which didn't even suggest that bees would go extinct, simply that humanity would go extinct if we didn't have bees. Everybody voted it down, simply because they didn't like the idea. Bees aren't gonna reach worldwide extinction anyway. The worst I could imagine is area-wide extinction.

The Chinese have already started pollenating food crops by hand.

Think about that a second: the bees there are fucked, as are many other species of insects and birds that pollenate for us and whose active participation in the food chain is necessary for that food chain to continue in its present form.

So now they have legions of people wandering around orchards and fields, dusting plants with pollen collected just for that purpose...

The Anthropocene era, indeed.

Now that is desparate measures, especially given that China is a major food exporter! If China turns in to a net importer a lot of people will go hungry :o I wouldn't be surprised if we all had to return to being farmers in the future.. but then the global population couldn't exceed about 1 billion due to the constraints of agriculture reliant on solar energy.

That's because we can utilise fossil fuels and other energy sources beyond what energy we get from the sun, sorry, unexplicit tangent.
Looks like we could starve before we run out of oil.

Anyone else heard of permaculture? Probably our only hope of sustaining ourselves without detroying everything (and therefore us with it) http://www.permaculture.org.uk/

Also, it might be of interest to you that modern psychology does not in general consider the relationship between humans and the world beyond individuals' minds or other humans, ecological existence is neglected.. is not mad to poison ourselves and kill off everything in pursuit of profit and unneccessary goods?

My dissertation for my psychology degree is currently planned to be if narcissistic and impulsive personalities are correlated with attitudes and action about climate change... I titled the proposal "Narcissism, Impulsivity and Climate Change: Too Cool to Care or Too Far To See?" I wrote it in the 8 hours before the deadline, i.e. 1 in the morning, after 2 failed attempts to cobble together an idea otherwise (I'd spent weeks planning an audiology experiment that went wrong then tried to design a cognitive-based experiment that went nowhere, had a gamble on the info I already had on impulsivity and attitudes to climate change and threw some narcissism in there for good measure)...

Got 65% as well!      fuckin' shittin it afterwards until my mark came back.

Has anyone heard of ecopsychology? It basically says as humans disregard nature in their life they've gone mad, we are technically killing ourselves after all :( mental illness is also 3 times higher in urban areas than in rural areas in the UK

So were the pesticides really the cause then?
Or did that law or whatever banning them pass for no reason

The pesticides might be a catalyst, and it was still passed for good reason since they're nasty and fuck the environment up. The only reason a lot of agricultural chemicals are still in use is because of companies being lazy in creating new ones while they can make profit and politicians not doing anything without being prodded....

never saw this thread when it first came out.

I urge everyone to watch this film, It addresses the exact same situation (from the perspective of e.m.f's largely being resposible for the bee's demise) and it's also relevant to our own health. In the film they do a test and put a cordless phone inside/next to a beehive and the bee's not only all vacate, they never actually return to it...

Mobile phones and wireless technology was great at first, still very useful, but you would be the surprised at how little saftey checks there were in to the effects of Long term exposure to the frequency's they emit.

It's not some conspiracy shit if that's what you're thinking either---think about the types of waves your phone gives off and then think about those waves being on your ear, in your pocket....for what, like 10-13 years so far?

well, just because the bees vacate and fuck off doesn't mean the waves are inherently harmful. they may or may not have something to do with the actual colony collapse disorder by disrupting their navigation and foraging process (i don't believe so; neo-nicotinoid pesticides seem like the culprit pretty conclusively), but they don't physiologically harm the bees. you can drive rats and mice off with an ultrasonic emitter, for example; that doesn't mean ultrasonic frequencies are unhealthy

also, the study cited in that video was widely misinterpreted, even according to the researchers themselves

http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar ... /104220119
"Our study was way before CCD and is not intended to claim the answer for that problem"
"The tests were only 45 minutes"
"the test was done on too few hives for a worldwide conclusion."
"The study also suffered technical problems. Bees were counted manually after a scanning"
in order for it to be harmful, the electromagnetic waves need to be ionizing radiation, ie, have enough kinetic energy to force electrons out of the molecules in your body, breaking the bonds between atoms and causing damage. the fact of the matter is that the waves emitted by cell phones simply don't have the kinetic energy necessary to do that.

It appears we won't know for another 50 years, the first full lifecycle of the generation of mobile phone and Wifi users. That's probably when there'll either be a complete lack of evidence or an over-whelming amount of it...
