Re: WIP Thread - GIVE FEEDBACK TO OTHERS BEFORE POSTING!!!
Feedback for others:
@donpablo: I like the structure of this track. Some suggestions: you could vary the amount of reverb on your clap...for instance, in each beat loop, you could set the decay time to 30% for the first three claps, and then max it out for the fourth clap. This is a technique I've used to give the track some movement. Also, consider using some white noise elements to help fill up the track.
@wolfblood: This track has a lot of character...some things I noticed while listening: perhaps this track could benefit if some static was added in first 30 seconds. Also, maybe the high-frequency synthesizer could use another layer on top of it. I haven't really made any tracks quite like this, so I feel like that's all the feedback I can give.
@ratcub: I really like the timbre of the mid-range synths and the saxophone, especially juxtaposed with the instruments you have in your drum rack. To improve your transitions, I'd consider adding a bit more variation in some of the drum patterns or some of the synth melodies. This may help give the track more movement and also may help it sound a bit less loopy. I've found that doing this technique has helped me to make some of my tracks sound more natural. I'd also consider adding some high and/or low-frequency synthesizers, to beef the track up a little, if that's something you're going for. I like the groove so far!
A clip of the track I'm working on is below. It's the first track that I've spent a considerable amount of time on so far (I'm just getting started), so I'd appreciate any suggestions.

@6exx - Dig the organ! Make sure you check out the moneyshot thread and master gain staging 'cause a tune like this need the drums to be bold!
@wolfblood - Cool intro! Try changing your wobbles a bit. Not really feelin' that synth - maybe be more sparse wit it.
@donpablo - Nice atmosphere! Maybe I'm weird (I AM WEIRD) but I felt the kick to be a bit to flabby for me.

lilwub- heh wasn't expecting those vocals, build up works, synth line is pretty catchy, everything sounds well mixed and the variation is there, i was caught off guard by this tune! heh where did you get the vox from, synth in the drop is nice and evil! that lead at the end is pretty wild to but i like it! nice one
6exx- yo! drums could use some beef but they are nice in their simplicity, i like the first melody/synth alot, super cool minimal feel going on. not sure im diggin the orgran tone, good start though for sure i like the intro alot!
SMOR3S - track is bangin, first thing i noticed is that everything is loud! which is good i guess im having trouble getting my mixdowns loud scared to ruin em' but i like the intro synth, almost has a latin rythm vibe to it kinda sweet

@user avatar misch: Nice intro. The riffs are nice and beefy but your hats sound really thing and just like they're all high end. I like the swing feeling you get but I would change the hats and cymbals. Also the kick sounds to be lacking any real low end. I really like the dark spacey atmosphere. Keep working at it.
@lonely Turtle: It's really catchy. I would work on that snare, and bring out the hats a bit more. the vox are nice; not too prevelant to get stale and I like the effects on them. The only thing this is lacking is better drums (although I do like the fills).
@donpablo: nice pads in the beginning. I wouldn't personally use that 808 clap in this. I'd look for something more reall sounding. The bass sits really nice. I would put a bit more in the background, some sort of pad that comes in and out. All in all really nice work.
Here's my latest. It's more hip-hop than dubstep but it still has a similar feel. I'd love to hear some thoughts on it so far.

Cheers, thanks for listening and critiquing! The "motherfucker" sample came from some loopmasters sample pack. I was scrolling through the pack looking to throw something in this song and I heard the "motherfucker". I initially thought it was a really stupid sample (and maybe it is) but I threw it in EXS24 and reworked it a bit to fit at 150bpm. The "drop that shit" vocal is me.misch wrote:lilwub- heh wasn't expecting those vocals, build up works, synth line is pretty catchy, everything sounds well mixed and the variation is there, i was caught off guard by this tune! heh where did you get the vox from, synth in the drop is nice and evil! that lead at the end is pretty wild to but i like it! nice one
I dig your track (varia-sphere) - sounds killer! Right before the drop, I would find a way to suck it out (filter cutoff maybe) to make the drop pop more. I wish I heard a bit more of the low frequency in the snare (200hz -ish). Try boosting there, layering a tom and/or saturation ( I <3 my sausage fattener).

cmgoodman1226 It's decent! I think you should make that square sounding lead a lot more upfront. The drums are really nice. Take out some of that low end on the snare though! Other than that it's pretty fucking dope man!
misch The idea is really good! The drop needs work, what I would do is make that sub more powerful, and bring the synths upfront more. And don't be afraid to switch it up more! Kick needs to come through more on its hits. Other than that it's really cool. A lot of neat phasing and morphing FXs you have going there hahaha.
LilWUB The intro reminded me of Beat It by Michael Jackson for a second, I don't know why hahaha. The motherfucka get's annoying after a while, make it a little shorter, thats my only complaint. Also its pretty weird, in a good way though haha. It's reminds me of a bad trip some how lol. Its lacking sub and the snare is a bit too quiet at the drop.
My current wip. Need to figure what to add to fill empty spaces at the drop.

6exx, all I can think for the moment is to add something to create more impact when the kick comes in. I like the clicky groove you have set up tho
Cmgoodman, I'm sure there's bass in there, but my ipod can't handle, but if not add that.
Here's one I've been working on the last couple days
http://m.soundcloud.com/thatjsound/subt ... cuitry-wip
I may have finally found the groove so next time I work on it, I'll add that. I also need to add a lot of percussive sounds and stuff to keep it interesting. Took me a while to realize how much of a skeleton this track is

Re: WIP Thread - GIVE FEEDBACK TO OTHERS BEFORE POSTING!!!
I usually lack when it comes to feedback, so I'll try and be way more descriptive this time around...
@dotcurrency: Hey Poop! LOL Ummm... So to start off, the sub is really nice, I can really feel it in the floor, which idk if that's a good or bad thing, but it's really deep and lush... The snares, and claps could be a little louder, and hold more dynamics... The snare has a nice round body on it, but the top end air, seems to be a bit un-noticeable... I my self don't usually have snares with a lot of high end to them, in my house music, if you listened to "Boom", they were really dry, round snares, but they had good punch, and the mid was poppy...
When the lead comes in @ 1:01, I feel the transition is way to quick, and it just glides in to much... Maybe leave a bar, or a 1/2 of one silent, then have it drop, with a clap, or snare hit before? I would also maybe add a bit more sidechain to your synths, to get a more pumpy feeling...
The growls, and saw bass sounds are nice... I love how gritty the saw bass is :3 I would maybe add a bit more distortion to your growl, cause it lacks a lot of high end it seems... If you have something like Driver, or if u use Ableton, the preset caslled "Warm up Highs" is really nice if you want some high end color distortion, but if you have Camelphat, try adding some tube distortion, and coloring up the high end a bit more...
@cmgoodman1226: Knew it was gunna be a trap tune right when I heard that pad in the intro :3 I agree with Dot on the snare... Cut the low end off more... Even 100Hz - 120Hz, and boost around 200Hz, and maybe add a high self around 6KHz+ The kicks to me seem a little muddy, and way to much roundness... What are your EQ settings like on them?
I like the pluck piano, I my self have started taking advantage of that sound, since I hear it a lot in Dub, Reggae, and Moombahton, and I have always wanted to do it for sometime now...
You could also turn up the high hats a bit more, add a tad more reverb, and maybe some delay... What are your EQ settings like on the hats also?
The overall track is pretty good, but maybe you could introduce a breakdown, where there are no drums what so ever, kind of like how you did the intro, so you give the listener a break, cause to me, straight drums and snare, the whole way through gets a bit repetitive, but that's me being picky...
The sub, and bottom end of the track is really lush, but like I said before, the kick slams way to hard...
@misch: Sounds like an Excision tune right off the start :3 has a really awesome Sci-Fi feel to it!
The cymbal crash at 0:28, is way to loud, and again @ 0:35, 0:41, and so on... It's way above the track...
The drop into 0:55 I feel is a bit quick also... You could of maybe started it a 1/2 a bar to a bar later... Give it a second to breathe, then drop it...
The track does sound a little busy in the mid range, and the snare to me has a lot of high end... Maybe put a notch @ 8KHz down? a couple db, and boost the mid of the snare more...
But overall I like the track, very interesting, unique, and has a cool feel!
What are your EQ settings like on your mid range and sub?, and are you using side chaining?
@LilWUB: I feeel you could of like cut the track @ 0:24, snare hit, and a vocal sample, then dropped it, like you did @ 0:51, cause it runs way to smoothly, and the "Mutha Fucka" sample comes from no where it seems... I love the sample though... The glitching, it really awesome...
Kick is really nice and punchy, and your hi hats are really crisp!
This track has me dancing for sure though :3 What genre would this be? Like Complextro, but like really funky O_o
I can't complain to much on the track at all really... I think it sounds really good! Maybe like every now and then you could make the vocals sound a bit different, like pitched higher or lower, or maybe have the vocals rise up, like a semi-tone at a time, as a build up?...
New Update of my BIDB's Track!
This is like the 5th mix cut of the track... I am pretty happy with how this one turned out...

Mid range starts @ 100Hz up, and Sub starts 100Hz down, so cut your Mid range @ 100Hz or above, and sidechain it to the kick... Even though Sidechain helps more with 4x4 type music, it does make a some what difference... It's better to at least give the kick a minimal amount of room to breathe, rather than not giving it any...misch wrote:SMOR3S wrote: thanks for the in depth review! helps alot, not much eq on mids maybe ill try and seperate them a bit more and no side-chaining going on anywhere

Re: WIP Thread - GIVE FEEDBACK TO OTHERS BEFORE POSTING!!!
The snare is great. Good variation in the drumbeat, to me the drums are the things that sound the most professional. The midrange bass(not the screeching one) is also pretty nice. The screechy synth works, but it's not my favorite part of the track. I like the high end layer of it just fine but the high-mid layer of it gets a bit tiring on my ears since it plays through the whole track, build, drop and everything. Also, thought that you could lose the whole part between :57 up to 1:10 and just have the drop start after the first build. But over all I'm really digging it.SMOR3S wrote:

Like the initial build the best with the low pass and all. Nice and chill. Also I like the kick for the track, but maybe try out a different clap that might fit better. The long sustained square sounding synth could probably have some of the mids carved out though, when it hits it's really harsh. It feels like the drop isn't quite as strong as it should be, maybe it needs more sub, or just something to make it contrast the builds more.dotcurrency wrote: https://soundcloud.com/dot_music/fightin-wip/s-QJYae
Nice rhythm in the beginning. Did you intend for it to sound a bit chip-tuney? The synths all sound a bit like basic waveforms which feels like it contrasts the more organic sounding drums.6exx wrote: https://soundcloud.com/6exx/dance-clip-a
And here's the new WIP I was working on today, titled after the airplane taking off sounding thing I made out of an 808 crash, distorted and put through a flanger. Mostly just testing out some new growls, and trying to fit them in the context of a track. I'm not sure about the laser synths in the drop, maybe they sound a bit cheesy. The goal was to make the drop bit have different basses but fit them together with rhythm and not to have it sound too disjointed.

Vagic- I like this, the intro isn't my thing, your drop is a little ADD it feels like and your kick feels off in places, but overall it's pretty sick.
LilWub - I like the sounds in the intro, I feel like you could be more creative with the hats but there's nothing wrong with the way it is, I feel like the song after the drop is too fast, but the whole track has a crisp feel. It sounds good.
Misch - This is a cool sound in the intro, I like the atmosphere, it reminds me of videogames I used to play, drums could be more crisp but overall this tune is fucking sick man, keep it up!
I started this this morning, it's mostly a test run for a new patch but I feel like it could be pretty sick.

@LilWUB Has a really nice Hardstyle feel to it! I like it the way it is.
@Vagic add some stereo to that kick. It sounds too centered or too loud or something.
@Dotcurrency could use some whistles or samples in between maybe. Or if you added reggae chords to it where the open hats are then it could fill out that space nicely. Maybe. But then it probably wouldn't fit with the rest of the song. Try laser/whistling samples or some other vocal clips and cuts.
Here's my WIP; It's a drop I'm having trouble with. I can't tell if it's too slow (140BPM) and I don't know what to add to it. My sub bass isn't matching up with anything I don't think. I just really need some instrumental additions I think, or some other ideas. PS: the progression goes B5, F#5, D5, B4.
I used a Carbon bass with a Bandpass and Double Notch for both of those vowel basses. As for the Yoy sounds are pretty basic.
Also, I haven't done any EQing on ANY of the drums, no compression yet, no mastering really. Just trying to get the instrumental synths layout of it all first before I go too indepth.

@byteme i do like the wip so far but i think the bass sits on top atm a bit just bring in the drums a tad more? hm yeah if its not mixed at all as you sad i do like it haha maybe add sth to make it stand out form the rest of brostepesc tunes?
@kes-es yeah i like the overall feel its loud but not really sharp so tahts good maybe a tad more quiet later. i do feel the drum placement though and the wonkyness of the bass so yeah just finish it and maybe try to bring in a new element at some point a pad or a fx or sth
@vagix tbh i do like the intro more then the drop. would have liked a straight trance song ahha hm doesnt sound bad but it takes away some of the uplifting feel of the intro so maybe if you keep the drop add some of the intro melodies inbetween and in the drop outro
@dotcurrency i do like the tune. maybe bring the snare out a tiny bit more and the bass a bit back. like how all the elemetns interact so far maybe differ them tiny bit more in stereo but overall its solid. not even sure if you need the mini growls i would say drop them and make it a nice song :3
@cmgoodman1226 wrote you on soundcloud a while ago def feel that tune
ok have two wips i dont know how to really finish of

I love your first track. I was banging my head to it love the beats.
The second track is also cool. What instrument are you using in the start? Is it a VSTi? I'd love to have it.
Great song.
Cool feeling.. the intro sounds abit like some of the classical/jazzy stuff I made awhile back before I was producing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1wuDF7x96g
Kes-Es:
Cool intro. I love that synth sounds like a ghost monster stuck in metal. Yea sick synth overall.
Here is my track I started during the 48 hour competition. Got abit further now. Really need tips on how to fatten it up and what parts of the mix are bad. Did I overcompress it? I feel like it is missing some punch but not really quite sure how to fix it. Maybe with other kind of compression?:

@ada really like your song you showed me why did you stop doing this style? def see this working together with your electronic music wouldnt stop doing this style reminds me of bohren and the club of gore at parts dunno really like it! haha
hm to your new wip has an uplifting feel to it would like a real prominent snare at some part though or clap. melody work is nice and progression too. some sharp edges here adn there but nothing major
hm to add more punch try maybe even extremer sidechaining maybe dunno if you have awhite noise solo sidechain that too add the snare thingy maybe even make a send channel for the synths where you place them wider so it sounds even fuller. hm but overall i do like it not as much as your old piano song though :3
oh and the sound in the beginning is a musicbox sampler sound so like multisamples of a musicbox and the background sounds i think are sth from a synth called aalto

I stopped doing that style because I wanted to learn how to produce. It is kinda hard doing anything at all without either a producer helping you (which I didn't have), being signed or doing it all by yourself. So I decided to start doing it all by myself.

Here is a new mix of the song, does it sound better to you?:

Re: WIP Thread - GIVE FEEDBACK TO OTHERS BEFORE POSTING!!!
yeah def sounds cleaner now! still miss a snaresc element
but thats personal preference so i think it might work without it too. maybe what you could try still is find the least important elements for mono and make them really stereo and on the sides so the important sounds like bassdrum bass hit really hard but yeah many say it has to be nice on mono too so try to a b while bringing them on the sides
oh and yeah i guess you where missing sth in your songs before producing maybe go back to them make new vips out of your pre producer era so you keep this part of you alive :3
