looking upgrade my eq

Post by Geey » Sun May 19, 2013 9:01 pm

I'm using logic and have enough of the in the box Eq, not enough bands to bring down the nasty frequencies and is just weird with the low frequencies.

So I'm in the process of trying out Eq's, I've been demoing the sonalksis eq which does sound loevly but Again only has 7 eq bands.

Gonna demo the fabfilter pro - q tomorrow

Can anyone recommend any other Eq's to try out? :w:

Fab Filter Pro Q, which I see you're about to try anyways. But yeah it's my favorite EQ, beautiful interface and I honestly don't know if it has a band limit but if it does I've never hit it. It's so easy to use and has great visualization that allows you to see exactly how it's affecting the frequencies. Can't go wrong with it.

the filters on this (free) eq.... http://www.aixcoustic.com/index.php/Ele ... opit/30/0/

The plugin offers two different algorithms. The algorithm 'Analog' was modelled on a transistor based circuit of a real analog EQ. On the other hand 'Digital' is a pure and neutral digital EQ without any coloration. 'Electri-Q - posihfopit edition' has up to 64 bands and offers several filter types.

Features:

intuitive GUI
up to 64 bands
two basic algorithms ('Digital' and 'Analog')
64-bit Assembler optimized
Economy Mode for less CPU Usage
all basic filter types (Peak, HighShelf, LowShelf, Highpass, Lowpass, Bandpass, Notch)
30+ special filters
Mono/Stereo (linked)
exact edit of frequency, gain, bandwidth
neatless Add/Delete of a band
customisable Default
A|B compare
import/export posihfopit presets
50 Presets

'Electri-Q - posihfopit edition' is a freeware version of 'Electri-Q'."

i suggest Waves H-EQ. it doesnt have more bands but it has many different hardware emulations for character, as well as plain digital modes for transparant eqing. also the unit has a piano roll below the analyzer so you can see exactly what the notes are corresponding with the frequencies for things like tuning drums or emphasizing the key of the track or for fixing those rogue notes that just dont sound right in the mix. the eq is very, very nice. lastly, dont worry about bands too much. just use another eq if you need more bands. the waves h-eq has 7 bands including the lp and hp filters. but it works quite amazingly.

Also check out DMG Audio's EQUICK. Its similar to the Fab Eq, plus you can try a demo out.

Equick or EQuality.

Pro q is also very nice which I see your demoing.

The DDMF stuff is good and you can get them free from CM. personally I don't much care for them, but they are very flexible and hard to beat at that price.

I use the CM plugins quiet regularly, and i also don't really use the DDMF eq's. But I do like EAReckon eq though, freq analyzer & limiter=win lol

if you can't get sound right w/ hi and low filters, hi and low shelves, and 4 mid-range bells... don't know what to tell you. Logic's EQ is at least as good as the waves RenEQ, which is the one that i see all over protools sessions all the time.

if you really really need more precision, pro-Q is great, especially the mid-side bits in a mastering context.

absolutely love the fixed EQ points on the API 560 waves emulation-- a few instances will work wonders in balancing your midrange.

and for bus-level mojo, i think the stillwell vibe EQ is a solid emulation of a both-pultec's-in-one-box thing. doesn't do the scooped curve pultec thing, but does give you a nice, musical high end and extend the bass well.

but probably 60% of the time, in a mix, i'm just using the logic EQ.

yeah logic eq is alright,i'd probably still have use for it, its just not as precise as id like sometimes in the mix.
also its rubbish down the low end, i never really noticed it that much till i upgraded my monitors to bm6as.
have you ever noticed that it sometimes has visuals for low end even if you cut the low end at say 200hz?

think i'm gonna try out some eq's today mentioned in this thread, big up everyone the response, extremely grateful :Q:

You were probably working with a sinewave by the 19th band.

If one were EQing the 2bus like that they should go back and fix their mix!

I really, really like Voxengo EQ. Light on CPU and has a bunch of really useful features including being able to load the visual from other instances of the VST in the project so you get a really nice visual of what frequencies are overlapping if you are having a hard time hearing what's going on. Ugly as sin, but get's the job done and lets you make up to 32 or 36dB cuts if you need it.

I use a combination of that and Waves H-EQ, very occasionally I use the Kramer Channel Strip, but only on certain sounds.

Hah, that's crazy :)

Sonnox Oxford are the best ones by the way, mad expensive though. Especially those restore effects.
But you definitely get what you pay for.

Have a look at the UAD 2 eq's. Incredibly precise eq's. Manley Massive passive and SSL 4k eq. Check them out
