Lockout

Framed criminal gets chance of pardon by rescuing the presidents daughter from an orbiting space station prison, written by Luc Besson.

Not fucking bad. Blatant ripoff of Fortress/Escape From New York, Guy Pearce is pretty jokes, Peter Stormare does a decent job as evil government man. Plenty violent, nice set pieces, cheesy dialogue and a predictable ending. Overall worth a watch but don't expect anything too serious.

Ah, thanks for the reminder - I started watching that but then it crashed. Looked promising. Will get back on the case!

In The Name Of The Rose

Sean Connery and a very young Christian Slater solve a series of murders at an abbey. Proper good watch, like a medieval Sherlock Holmes style whodunit. Also stars a young Ron Perlman.

Hoodlum

1930s gangster film with Laurence Fishburne, Tim Roth and Andy Garcia. Decent watch, 20mins too long and a bit cliched. Directed by the the guy thats always shaving in Predator, also starring the guy who played the obnoxious reporter in the first two Die Hard films.

Decently acted, decently shot, well cast but didn't offer anything particularly new and after about an hour it couldn't rescue itself from being BORING AS FUCK so we watched a documentary on rock pools instead.

Wonderful. Everyone should see this, Mikkelsen is fabulous. I'm glad he's getting the recognition he deserves

^^I have that waiting for me  Mikkelsen really is very good. Plays Dr. Lecter in the new series Hannibal, which i'm thoroughly enjoying.

Clockers

Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese. Harvey Keitel, John Turturro, Delroy Lindo, Mekhi Phifer and Michael Imperioli (Chris from The Sopranos). Sounds good, right? Well yeah, it's good but not great.
Pretty much a by-the-numbers hood flick with a slight twist. Well acted and all but doesn't really show the actors range. Idk who's fault that is, the director or the writers, but it seems like it could have been better.
6/10 but easily forgettable.

New Jersey Drive
Image
Again, pretty straight forward hood shit about car thieves.

I'm sure both of these films were better at the time, you know, they meant more - it's tough growing up in the hood/failed education system/corrupt cops/drugs/party & bullshit etc. but they just seem a bit dated now. This applies very much so for the other film I saw recently..

The Education of Sonny Carson
Image
Based on the best-selling autobiography but sooo dated that any social commentary there was is now almost entirely obsolete.
BUT if you're a fan of Ghostface Killah's 'Ironman' then this is worth a watch for all the samples used - "Just me and you muthafucka, just me and you!I put trademarks around your fuckin eye..." etc.

Fuck it, it's on yt

Yeah I'm also enjoying Hannibal a lot. Dancy is good, Mikkelsen is good, Fishburne I'm not really a fan of but it really isn't afraid of going full frontal with the gore/visuals. I can't really tell where the whole Hobbs subplot is going though, I'm kinda waiting to see if something substantial comes out of it but until now it feels more like a drag than anything else (haven't seen 1x09 yet)

If you're familiar with Vinterberg's work and if you like his previous movies you're gonna love this one. A lesson in cinema IMO

Tbh, for me, all the other characters are just a plot device for the genius of Hannibal. I couldn't care less about them apart from Dancy. It's basically the Hannibal and Dancy show. Their relationship is fascinating, Hannibal is able to get into everyone's head with ease but Dancy, because of his condition, seems to be a genuine challenge for him. He's like a kid with a new toy but still with the restraint and poise of a much more sophisticated being. Wonderful. On the flip of that, will Dancy's condition and continuing work with the fbi lead to a realisation of Hannibal's extracurricular activities. I think Hannibal finds this possibility exciting as the pre-existing methods of detection employed by the various law enforcement agencies have always fallen short.

I am not familiar with Vinterberg's work although I also have 'Festen' waiting for me. Should I watch it first?

You might want to watch Festen first so that you'll see Vinterberg's first film (second actually, but Festen is his first acclaimed work) and then the most recent one, you'll get what his style is about. Keep in mind Festen is dogma so there's a quite a big difference between both films, first one is more amateur-ish in a good way. They're both classics though

Buffalo 66 is fucking awesome.

We span time together. We're a loving couple spanning time. We span time. These photos are us... spanning time. Could you hold me for a second? Don't touch me.

lol. His (Vincent gallo) album on Warp records was pretty great too. He did a track with RZA that was odd but still cool.
