i can understand point and click games that need to be long because its like watching a tv show but games are difforent because you can play them over.

Once you get the hang of it (no pun intended) you'll start to notice how amazing the fluency of the game is. Once I got the gameplay down I seriously couldn't stop playing it. Think I might give it another go on the higher difficulty soon.
this. second playthrough and it feels just as fresh as the first time.

Actually most of my gaming time lately has been taken up by Total War Shogun 2, which aside from giving me a good 90 hours of play so far, regularly kicks my ass with difficulty in both single- and multiplayer. Doesn't mean I can't appreciate a short, expertly crafted linear experience just as much.

It's weird to me how being linear is considered a negative in video games.

I just can't get into "open world" games like I can with purely story driven ones.
I always hype myself up for rpgs like fallout or oblivion play through the main story in a few hours and then let the game collect dust on my shelf.

If it doesn't have great multiplayer (true meaning of non-linear in my opinion) or a great story, I lose interest in the game really quickly. I'll take the 9 hour linear game that had all of it's dev time poured into that 9 hour experience over a game with 100+ hours of mediocre content.

How is the new tomb raider? Got it off of uplay for $17. I remember being insanely confused playing it on ps1 as a kid.

Most of the the "open world" rpgs lack a solid story compared to other RPGs especially if you can create your avatar when compared to RPGs where you are given a specific character with a backstory.
They tend to be you character X vs some ancient evil with some generic blurb about your past.
Hell I love Morrowind and dislike Skyrim and really hate Oblivion, but when you compare the writing to say Planescape Torment it's a joke.

never played the old ones but this one plays like an uncharted game. very cinematic, fun combat, looks brilliant if you can run on high settings.

The new tomb raider is good.
Not the same as previous tomb raiders though.
More focused on the 1st person shooter aspect.
It looks beautiful and is certainly well worth it.
I enjoyed the stealth aspcts.
