Getting your songs heard & discovering new music?

What methods are you guys you using to get your songs out to a wider audience and to discover new music?

I've been mostly trying to get my music out through word of mouth, friends, message boards, etc. but there's only so much I can do there. Discovering good (mostly underground) mostly involves manually crawling through message boards, which takes a while. Anyone got any good resources they use or would recommend?

I am considering doing some more research and putting together a comprehensive article on getting your music out there for the community. Would there be interest in something like this?

Write good music and send it out to some DJ's who you respect who play your genre/style of music. There's no short cut mate. (Unless you know someone BIG who owes you a massive favour...)

Any suggestions on getting their attention? Getting a hold of local DJ's would be straightforward, but bigger DJs must get requests everyday. So how would someone stand out from the crowd?

Like I said build a sick tune, I bet you anything you like when Distance/Mala/Youngsta open their E-mail up and listen to the tunes they've been sent, they don't look for a sob story with the tune, or a picture what you drew of them. All they're after is a solid tune, and they'll listen to every track they get sent to find one. Just remember to ID your track correctly. *"Artists name" - "Track Title"* Then give your E-MAIL in the ID3 tags. Not being a fucking beg helps a lot too. Be respectful, but don't pester them or nag them to listen to your tune.

Possibly the greatest advice I've ever heard. I can't stand reading people's descriptions of themselves like: "Brostep artist Y made a name for himself in 2009 and has been tearing up clubs from Miami to Ibiza ever since. Between his sonically adventurous production sessions and live DJ'ing, brostep artist Y is one busy cat that shows no signs of slowing down." It's cheap and arrogant. In fact, the more you try to sell yourself, the worse you look. In my opinion, of course.

Fuck worrying about elaborate marketting shit with logos, a youtube channel, a facebook page, a twitter page, getting on spotify and itunes etc. I'm just going to produce until I have a tune I know for certain is massive, then send it to my favorite DJs and hope for the best.

Simple formula I think:

1. Make outstanding music - don't even worry about promotion untill you're doing this. Focus on this alone.

2. Draw up a long list of contacts you want to speak to and learn how to approach people correctly. Do not spam, chose your targets wisely.

If no.1 has been done well, then building up a network and getting into interesting conversations / opportunities should happen fairly easily. It's hard not to ignore good music (sent to a relevant contact).

Just trawl Soundcloud. There's a massive pool of talent out there for finding undiscovered artists, and I try to give them recognition by following and commenting if I feel there music
