Laid-back chillstep wobbles help?
Laid-back chillstep wobbles help?
Would anybody be able to help me out? Im not asking how to make a chillstep wobble im basically wanting know just the basics so i can kind of tweak with it all myself and try to get a sound that i like and would like to use. But im pretty new though. Some questions that i have is like what waveforms can really give you some good thick background kind of basses? I dont want like a super in your face growl i want to try making some more chillstep sounding stuff. Like a really good example would be Blackmill and how he has the amazing sounding bass in the background of all his bright sounds. Also aside from from the waveforms what are some other things that i can throw into it (ex. dimension expander, fm synthesis, bitcrusher, reverb, etc.) to further the sound? i dont want it handed to me just can anybody kind of throw me a bone or at least point me to a really good spot to learn such as a good tutorial or something? If it helps at all i use logic and mainly massive but i also have sylenth1. And im sorry if i posted this in the wrong area or anything this is my first post and i thought this would be a really good place to learn from some people who really know what it is that theyre doing.
a really good example of the sound that i would like to have a greater understanding of right at about 1:26

I've got to admit too many people are copying Blackmill now with the structure, synths etc.. so i wouldn't advise copying everything :/
I'll share my attempt at making a "chill wobble"

It's not exactly there but it should lead you in the right direction.

Thanks man. I think ill kinda screw around with it and see where it leads me. And im not trying to copy blackmill im just drawing inspiration from him. Thats why i didnt want people telling me exactly what to do but instead just give me a few pointers to go off of. I like his sound but that doesnt mean im going to do everything he doesclayrocks wrote:I've got to admit too many people are copying Blackmill now with the structure, synths etc.. so i wouldn't advise copying everything :/

Re: Laid-back chillstep wobbles help?
okay, if i were you and i was just starting out, I would try to do this in sylenth, not massive. this is what you should do:
for sub bass -> use sine waves.
for midrangey bass like the one in the blackmill tune -> use sine, saw/trisaw, pulses, triangle, anything goes pretty much.
Low-pass filter!!! very important. higher cutoff for midrange, lower for sub, obviously.
put an LFO on your "Cutoff filter AB" or on "Volume AB". turn gain/destination all the way up. sync the rate. choose which ever rate you want. you can also automate the rate in your DAWs envelopes section (I don't use Logic so I'm not exactly sure where that is).
don't worry about reverb or anything like that. sylenth and massive don't support FM synthesis anyway so don't worry about that either. maybe some distortion (I personally hate the bitcrusher sound, but to each their own), EQ, or compression.
Oh, and WATCH TUTORIALS! That is the best way to learn IMO.

Dubstep-(The wub*The drop+ everything that makes Dubstep/Brostep cool) = ChillStepCubicle wrote:What the fuck is chillstep
It should literally be called ChillHype, because it's a blatant attempt to repackage a sound, by simply changing it's name to a term that's currently buzzing.
I don't hate it because the music nearly puts me to sleep, and that I need a steady dose of Brostep (recently, getting into Rusko) to keep my heartrate going, but because it blatantly hopped on the "INSERTRANDOMGENRE-Step" bandwagon. All artistic integrity went out of the window with that blatant marketing scheme. Money/Art, I guess.
Re: Laid-back chillstep wobbles help?
^how do you see the word "chillstep" as a marketing scheme? if anything it's a word made up by "chill" stoner/hipster brostep-haters in an attempt to differentiate it from skrillexy dubstep
Re: Laid-back chillstep wobbles help?
Alright well then lets just call it very laid back and relaxing electronic music. Whatever the case may be it is an awesome genre to listen to as youre going to sleep

Stoner/Chill Guy 1: Hey, I'm broke let's make money, I mean music. Know anything hot right now?
Stoner/Chill Guy 2: Yeah, this joint. HARHARHAR!
Stoner/Chill Guy 1: I was thinking more related to musical genres.
Stoner/Chill Guy 2: Totally dubstep, bruh.
Stoner/Chill Guy 1: Yeah, but that's too aggressive and the basslines are too complex for my my baked brain to follow.
Stoner/Chill Guy 2: We can always play bongo's.
Stoner/Chill Guy 1: I got it! Let's make dubstep, but without anything that sounds remotely dubstep, and call it chillstep.
Stoner/Chill Guy 2: But dubstep without wobbles and a drop is just some generic genre, right?
Stoner/Chill Guy 1: No. It's called chillstep. See what I did there?
Stoner/Chill Guy 2: I'm confused.
Stoner/Chill Guy 1: When aren't you? You need to go on a T-break, bruh.
Do you get my point?

So many stupid terms for itCubicle wrote:What the fuck is chillstep

Here's what i've seen around youtube for terms which relate to 'chilled out dubstep'
Chillstep, Liquid Dubstep, Melodic Dubstep...

Why is everyone in this topic just dissing on what they think the genre should be called? It is what it is. I created this topic to actually talk about some productions techniques of it...

Im so lost in words right now.... The genre to me is simply unique if you ask me, its mix of lots a genres and Blackmill is a smart dude and we will see more of this melodic type of music and coming back of the disco age with more funk music

Re: Laid-back chillstep wobbles help?
^^Interesting ... I thought the hedonistic attitude brought forth in the current generation by the economic collapse, which induced a panic in our global consciousness, causing us to want to escape through excessive partying, and copious drugs, caused the need for more aggressive, in-your-face music such as brostep, giving rise to such "greats" as Skrillex and Datsik -- say what you want about our electro-emo poster child, but he's amazing at what he does.
Anyway, If anything were to culturally change, you'd slowly see pop culture "morphing" toward this retro-phase you speak of -- which of course hasn't happened yet. And with the rapid rise in popularity of Brostep, and it's siblings, we can assume that we'll be stuck on this hedonistic treadmill for a while, especially with the ego-driven social networks acting as reminders of a night no one can remember, and everyone can see.
For our culture to become more "chill," many of the pillars that define this generation, need to be razed -- Social Networks, self-made teenage billionaires, reality TV, etc.
And with corporate America's vested interest in keeping these very pillars' structural integrity as high as ever, we need to take on "them," if we even want a fighting chance. And if we've learnt anything from previous generations, it's that a fight like that always ends with the rebels growing up, and losing sight of their goal, and then later - after much accumulated wealth - becoming part of corporate America, so the only sensible thing would be to stay on this hedonic treadmill for as long as we possibly can - forget reason, fuck social class, what is cool?
THE DADA MOVEMENT is making a comeback.
