Headphones are fakes.

Post by Kandicaine » Thu Jun 13, 2013 8:42 am

So I'm in the market to buy some new headphones. I'm relatively new to mixing but I want good gear.

I've been wary of buying online because of fakes. Been looking into Dre beats Mixr headphones and Tiesto AKG 267 headphones. Have heard that they're good.

I recently found out my beloved monster turbine pro golds (which I've owned for over a year and nearly killed someone over because they stole them) are fakes. Fakes... but the best headphones I've ever owned in my life.

Wondering... in a good quality counterfeit, is there really a huge difference. Is it a gamble or should I just save the possible hassle and buy retail. I mean... these things sound amazing, huge bass, crisp sound. I only paid $70 for them, I figured they were stolen.

I'm not totally unaware of good quality sound either. I've considered myself an audio junkie basshead for years. I've been using these headphones for all of my production projects and they've been spot on for creating perfect sound.

On another note, which should I get? The dre beats mixr or the tiesto AKG267s?

Both of those headphones have people's names attached to them which ups the price compared to normal headphones. Search the forums and find any other headphone thread and buy some plain good ones. Names mean nothing but a higher price for a lesser product

Well aside from the name I've heard that the Tiesto ones are reallllllly good and that AKG makes killer headphones. The next step up are like... 712s or something for like $600.

I dont really know what good headphones are for this. Just what I've heard.

Beyerdynamics or gtfo.

I have a par of beats (got them free from a monster rep), and they suck for producing. The mids sound very nice and the highs have a slight boot that I can deal with, but dat bass! Gives me a headache if I'm working with anything under 300hz. Not to mention, there uncomfortable and broke hella easy. The only good thing is, the cables that came with them make great instrument cables for my iPads. :6:

Get the Bob Marley headphones. Everything will sound like you just smoked a pound.

But seriously, I like my AKG 240s a lot...a lot...

That seems like it'd help you focus while producing.

This.

I've got the audio technicas in the mail right now. If you email Scit Scat and offer them 100, they'll take it. They're just not allowed to advertise that price.

Just ordered these. "Monoprice" is the brand, don't remember the exact model. Apparently really good for the really low price:

I only buy headphones with removable audio cords, then buy a packet of 8-10 cords off ebay. Doing anything else is dumb as fuck IMO. Cords are fragile as shit and infallibly break if you're going out and about with them, but make up extremely little of the price of a pair of headphones. So your fancy headphones which cost upwards of 60 pounds can be made useless because an extremely cheap piece of tech breaks. There's no reason why all headphones shouldn't have replaceable cords.

Not Grados for mixing or listening to bass music. But their SR60i and SR80i are really good value for cheap. They're a lot of people's first foray into audiophile quality cans, but I'd say they're better for rock music or something mid focused.
(which might actually be a lot of dubstep these days :corncry: )

Just a side note about picking headphones for a certain task. Head-fi is the most comprehensive resource for discussing headphones but keep in mind their perspective is completely about listening and making the source sound good. Whereas for mixing duties you want a headphone that's clinical and honest, something that's not going to hide the faults in your mix. I usually try to keep that in mind when reading reviews and cross reference with Gearslutz.

I totally agree. There a niche product, just like Beets. Great for listening to live instrument based music, but not so good at producing on.

So many different headphones and different opinions and different uses. Never had this much trouble deciding before lol.

Should I just get the tiesto 267s? Every online review for dj headphones this year says theyre top of the line and at $350 theyre right at my max price range.
