Question regarding reverb

Post by ParadigmAU » Wed Jun 12, 2013 2:00 pm

Say i want to make a high end bell melody and run it through a cathedral style reverb but i also want some lower end bass to run through the same kind of verb.

Will running different elements through long reverb cause mudiness or not?

These elements would be running at the same time.

Low frequency reverberation will always cause mudiness. If you insist on doing this I'd recommend using two reverbs, same settings (?) on sends with a filter after the reverb to give you some control over the frequencies.

No matter what you do, if you reverb lows then it'll sound muddy. Might not be so muddy that it'll ruin your mix, but my advice is lowcut all reverb down from 200Hz. Or at least put an EQ after the reverb and decrease the lows in dB a touch.

Running two elements through the same reverb won't cause any more muddiness than running the same elements through two separate reverbs, if that's what you're asking.

You can have them both going but you'll need to separate the frequencies enough. Find the sweet spot where they can both be playing and still sound good. It's difficult and will take a lot of cross referencing but it's totally doable. A lot of techno uses reverb as the sub bass while still having a heavy kick. Make good use of your sends, and be smart about the signal chain, and yeah I'd probably use 2 separate reverbs.

If you add the reverbs using sends you can high pass them to eliminate some of the muddiness.

Are you using audio samples or midi?
If I were you, I'd frequency split so you have better control over the volume of the low and the high. Sure, you could slap an eq on the one track but you might decide you want a shorter reverb time for the low end or to control it in some other way.
You could use a send track/channel and route it so you get a duplicate signal or you could just make another regular track with the same instrument and reverb.
Reverb on bass can be used for a neat effect, you just have to know how to control it and mix it.
