On a stylistic note it's supremely annoying that the author uses the verbs "DJ" and "produce" interchangeably. :?

Same, ghost dj. I spose if you play out in a mask or just played premade mixes you could have a ghost dj.

But all producers DJ (at least if they want to make any money unfortunately), it's the way of the dance music world (unless you're producing for a large pop act).
Not that all producers who DJ are immediately skilled at DJing or should be booked.

That's part of the problem IMO - esp. in America, all these fools talked shit 'bout "I hate techno" listening to their Creed rekkids and now the same folks are all "party people" and yet... know nothing about electronic music as a whole, as a historical phenomenon, as a socioeconomic experience, yadda yadda - and think DJing and producing are the same thing, or at best intrinsically related to each other. They're not. They both have a time and a place but music exists discretely, while DJing would not exist without production.

I mean, the real problem is that the people who get sold to the general public as artists are almost as a rule not much more than performers & entertainers. Now, it's possible to be 2 or even all three of those (Prince...) but not common. This is nothing new. In this sense "ghost producing" has been going on for much longer than just the history of EDM. Hell, the guitar solo on the Kinks' "You Really Got Me?" Played by a young Jimmy Page as a session musician long before Zeppelin was a glimmer in anyone's eye. But the point is that the consumers don't demand too much authenticity, only the veneer of it, and there'll always be some vapid pretty face to play the game and pretend to be talented.

They're not musicians when they say "Oi mate, take some screechs, wobs and wubs like Skrillex and take a dash on #2, #5 and #6 on Beatport and make sure it hits top ten there too, thanks!".
On the other hand when you have people like Goldie who sit in the studio with say Rob Playford and collab the whole way through with one being the idea man the other the technician...

Yeah - I know what you mean, but that's nothing new in the music industry though. Plenty of talentless fucks in the music industry whose only role was just looking pretty/edgy/mostly naked in front of a camera.
