CPU / Logic Issue.
Hey all, as i'm sure many off you do i've got an issue witch i think is down to my CPU. Logic Pro 9 is what i'm running with a Focusrite Liquid Mix 32 witch should be taking some off the processing power, my interface is a Saffire 6 (upgrading soon to a Pro 40), my Mac has 4GB ram and a 500GB HD in witch 250GB's are free. I only have Logic open when i'm producing, i even turn the internet off and yet some days i come to make a tune and Logic's having none off it, just wont play the track keeps overloading. I'm not pushing it hard at all, sometimes even when i open logic the CPU/Audio meter in the transport bar is already half way without me even playing anything! Ableton is exactly the same, seems to overload at nothing (10 channels).
Another note, i've also got that memory clean app from the app store witch helps, but what i don't understand is after i've re-booted my mac, once it comes on i open up memory clean and already 2GB off ram is being used, without anything being open?
I'd read through tonds off posts online and on hear but nothing seems to be working, kills the vibes when logic crashing every second.
So yeah if any off you can share some light on the matter it would be greatly appreciated. Peace

Re: CPU / Logic Issue.
Processor? What kind of your using, how fast?
The operating system and background programs are eating that 2gigs of RAM I guess, but really that shouldn't matter a ton as far as your DAW is concerned unless you are working with a ton of audio files or really big ones. You might try adjusting your buffer settings and such.
Also, have you tried customer service with Logic? They might have suggestions on optimizing your system for Logic.
Also, so you say it's maxing out and crashing w/ 10 channels. What are you running? 10 instances of U-he Diva?

Re: CPU / Logic Issue.
I've been having this problem lately and it's incredibly frustrating. I found that the problem seems to happen most when I have my laptop plugged into my monitor via HDMI (idk why this would have cause it). The problem also seems to go away when I unplug all of my USB things keyboard/soundcard and just use my headphones on the built in audio. None of this probably helps you much, but we can suffer together!

Re: CPU / Logic Issue.
@fragments - Sorry mate, my processor is 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5. For example a project i'm working on now has around 10 instants off Kontakt and Omnisphere (five off each). And around 20 channels off audio files. I used the freeze option in Logic and froze everything, but i had to bounce the track 10 times before it decided not to crash and bounce the whole track out. I've not tried customer service either mate, could be a good bet, but from my understanding Apple make Logic run slow on purpose so that you have to but the highest spec mac to be able to run it without any issues witch equals more money for them.
@Huts - Yeah i've read up on that mate, i have a external monitor plugged in through the thunderbolt port, i also have both my USB's plugged in, one off them being a USB hub witch has a future 4 things plugged in. And my firewire port if also in use. I get the problem weather all this is plugged in or not however, thanks for the suggestion though mate!

Re: CPU / Logic Issue.
5 Kontakts and 5 Omnispheres? Could be you are lagging your system a bit. Contact instruments are probably loading quite a bit of audio onto your RAM. Omnisphere is sample based as well, correct? It may actually be a RAM issue. But I'm sure five Kontakts plus five Omnispehres ain't light on the CPU either. You have the cores unlocked and all that I assume? I really know nothing about Macs TBH. I recently optimized my studio desktop for audio, but I don't know how much you can customized OSX.
I'm really trying not to piss myself over Apple makes Logic run slow on purpose...because I've never heard that...but I totally believe it.

Unlocked the cores? Whats that all about mate, never heard off the before? What sort off things did you customised on you're pc? I've done a few bits on my mac but nothing seems to make a different. My buffer speed is 256 in Logic as well. Yeah i understand that using multi instants off Kontakt and Omnisphere will batter my ram, i don't usually have that many in other projects, but sometimes you need them.
Yeah man it's typical Apple though ins't it? Not only do you have to spend ££££ on a mac, you also have to spend even more getting a high spec one.

Re: CPU / Logic Issue.
Isn't the i5core a multicore processor? At least on Windows you can change the BIOS settings to change how the CPU handles processing with multicores. This isn't overclocking, something different. I don't really understand it, I did a youtube walk through for my processor.
Basically I went through all the "background" programs and turned off everything that wasn't essential I also turned off all the pretty GUI crap in Windows 7.
It sounds like you might just be taxing your Mac tbh. Do you also have several reverbs and delays running? Or are you doing that from that DSP FX unit?

I also disable firewalls and microsoft security essentials unless I'm updating my studio computer.

Re: CPU / Logic Issue.
Feel your pain man, but im also using an i5, and it flies. Although I do have 16gb ram, like people are suggesting, that might be the problem
