The Official Growl Bass Thread
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
I'm not saying recreating tunes from producers is a bad thing, it's a very nice way to learn, but making 'original' tunes using someone else's sound is something else imo

Would love to hear some tips from xtronk and KilltheNetwork, if you guys would be so kind as to point me in the right direction for me to begin experimenting on my own.

I just bought Sytrus today and having a bit of FM synthesis skill I decided to make a growl with it.

Ones in the last tune would be nice if you could share some info on. Doesn't sound too complicated, but was nicehookjunior wrote:Sorry for the really long video but there is a lot of growl content it here.

I do have the patch for this up on my tumblr blog if anyone wants to take a closer look.
Lastly, I reuploaded to the same url but this time without the atrocious intro thing and with the growl being clearer.

Also I would like to know the details on the growl from "STRFKR - While I'm Alive (Barely Alive Remix)" if that is possible. Those are some wonderful growls.
I don't understand how you get that almost nasally quality from them, pretty great.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Ive never really attempted to make a growl. I know the basic but what stuff can i do make something stand out? What is there to modulate to get some sick turns and sqeeks? How do you normally automate your sounds?
Heres my attempt the past few minutes.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
i guess you could say this clip uses some "hollow skrillexy" growls and since people were asking for pointers if you'd like an explanation id be more than happy to send you in the right direction. note there is no sub bass in the clip

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
I got a couple questions
. Same thing what i said above? What stuff did you modulate and did you try use a vocoder some how? What synth did you use just wondering?
*Ops forgot, did you resample it to a fair extent? Ive tried to resample couple basses and they dont sound as nice as the original sound but sound more mechanical. I poped it into a simper and messed with starting loop and other stuff. Maybe try kontaks sampler.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
The sound was made using FM8. In order to get the vowel sound, I used the WOW filter, but instead of just slapping it on, I modulated vowel A and B along with the resonance, mix, and envelope settings. Instead of resampling, I used sends to layer fx such as chorus, flanger, dimension expander, reverb, ring mod, and various distortions. (all in small amounts). Then I bounced the audio out and applied any lfo motion using xfers lfo tool.(great plugin for side chaining as well).R3b_Official wrote:I got a couple questions. Same thing what i said above? Chorus , ensemble, flanger are very useful for widening your sounds. On certain sends its important to eq out unwanted frequencies. For ex. you don't want any of the reverb which will make ur sound bigger on the low frequencies as it will simply muddy up your sound. Likewise go easy on the distortion in the lower frequencies as it will ruin any sub bass that your sound has. (unless of course u add a separate sub with matching pitch bends, lfos etc.)
hope that helps a bit, and I can't stress enough that one bit of off automation will make the whole sound sound like trash, so mess around until you find the sweet spot and then just tweak it from there.
cheers,
AC
