I have a good tip for people.
After filtering your bass and such, import it into your song. If you don't like the sound of it, surprisingly, a lot of the time it sounds better reversed. The second reese part in here is reversed
Oh and ignore the terrible mixdown, i find it really hard haha

the moment you've all been waiting for: MODERN TALKING reeses lol
the second bar is processed very differently from the first, can you tell? which do you think is better?

Made a reese-ish sound today. Just fucking around with a shitty melody and some drums, but here's a riff:
Soundcloud
Did some frequency splitting, and the second 8-bar phrase is with some EQ modulation on the mid band. Not sure which one sounds better.

Made this today

First part was the original sound which was 3 different massives with some effects. Second part is resampled a lot with a LPF, HPF and notch filter giving more movement.

Not in any particular order.... distortion (Ableton Amp, Ableton Cabinet, Camelphat and ohmicide), chorus, flanger, wow filter and possibly more (Can't remember). I'll post a screen shot later onbouncingfish wrote:Sick!s3nate wrote:Made this today

They key in my opinion is automating the amount of LFO on the auto filters, the LFO rate on the filters and also the frequency it is at. Gives a much better result than just assigning the cutoff freq to a knob and going seizure happy on it.

I'm okay at making you usual style reese but I need some help creating something more like this...
Soundcloud
I know it doesn't sound technically like a reese, but I'm sure it's using a lot of the same techniques and methods and features in the same genres.
Help me!

Re: The Reese Bass Thread
I think this belongs here? I used nothing but vocal percussion and beatbox sounds (being inspired by some Reggie Wats last night) and made what I think qualifies as a reece? It wasn't too hard so here's how I went about it.
The bass you hear is basically a raspberry sound with my lips at the same time humming the same note. Imagine them like osc1 and osc2. Since I'm human, they detune already. I recorded it running it through some distortion and chorus. Then ran the sample through wow with a slow lfo (I think 1/2 or 1/4) band reject with some resonance and distortion and that was pretty much it.
Soundcloud
Edit: Wait no I lied... I didn't hum... I just did a raspberry at a low note and used my tongue to control how much air was in my mouth, which kind of modulated the pitch. It's hard to explain.

Re: The Reese Bass Thread
Been working on reese basses lately. I keep having this problem where they sound very noisy. Using massive, detuned saws, multiple voices and the pitch cutoff. It sounds like I turned a noise generator on or something? Is this a normal problem any one know how to deal with it?

Neuro bass line in this song is what I'm talking about.

Re: The Reese Bass Thread
it's just the nature of saw waves and them being detuned. there's loads of harmonics in a saw wave, so there's loads of highs the more of them you have detuned against one another, use less voices or try using bandpass filters if you don't want the highs. IMO it sounds pretty sick in that tune though. maybe a waveshaper to get it a tiny bit heavier wouldn't hurt (and a bit more quiet overall), but that's just my opinion.tayo wrote:Been working on reese basses lately. Waveshaper? Like an enveloper? How would you use it?Reversed wrote:it's just the nature of saw waves and them being detuned. there's loads of harmonics in a saw wave, so there's loads of highs the more of them you have detuned against one another, use less voices or try using bandpass filters if you don't want the highs. This reese is pretty special in a way, I tried a new thing I thought of where I would make 2 instances of massive, 1 is just a standard detuned reese, and the other is a non-detuned reese (a saw wave, basically, lol).
Then I would take out frequencies from each instance with maximus. So you have like the 2 synths taking up different parts of the spectrum, the detuned one maybe 0-400 hertz, the non detuned one 400-800hz etc. Then there's alot of disto from Fruity fast dist, Distroyr and camelphat. I often get like feedback on my high-end in basses and stuff, no idea what I do that others dont, haha.
Oh, when the sound is like super detuned, the two instances of massive are playing 2 semitones apart, then there's just some pitching up and eq modulation after that.
Hope I answered what you wanted to know, haha. Tell me if I missed something you really wanted to know

Re: The Reese Bass Thread
Well, you can be pretty creative with waveshapers... but in this context i'd use it to make the sound louder and change its characteristics a bit, start out with something really basic like this:ieatfunk wrote:Waveshaper? Like an enveloper? How would you use it?
http://i.imgur.com/pCGiLuR.jpg and then pull the first point closer to the left side to make it louder as a whole, then change the slope to get the right distortion, and then just play around to get the right characteristics out of it. It's pretty fun / effective to use on pretty much finished sounddesigns, can lead to interesting results...
thanks! Sounds pretty interesting... gonna have to try that 2 synths layering thing out, probably works great with other synths as a base too!blinkesko wrote:whooops, late reply at this, pardon dat.

By the way, since I'm already posting here, here's a reese (or hoover actually i guess?) made in sytrus with some detuning and FM synthesis... almost unprocessed it sounds like this (no modulations or anything):
Soundcloud
pretty fun to start off with (it's also how i made the bassline of the tune in my sig @3:15, just with some formant filtering, bandpass & distortion added) if anyone wants to know how the patch works just ask
