I need help creating a buildup that sounds a bit like the first buildup in the track "Frainbreeze" by Pegboard Nerds:
Soundcloud
I've tried triplets but I can never seem to get it right as it sounds too straight, so I added a groove but I can't get any settings that sound good.
Help!

I definitely don't think you want a groove, it might be as simple as making the volume of the 2nd and 3rd kicks in the triplet lower... if you didn't try that already that is. Either that or maybe hi-passing the 2nd and 3rd kicks a little more. That way it will emphasize the triplet and maybe make it sound better. Just guessing here though.

Isn't that midtempo swing in that track? Also it's all about the riddim and syncopation for buildups imo. And as Add9 said it's not about the groove, keep it simple.

Okay, it's hard to tell from listening to the song because the other instruments are kinda loud, but this is what I think it sounds like. It sounds pretty basic to me. I don't think you need a special kind of groove. There seem to be a few groups of maybe 4-7 kicks at a time, with a little bit of time passing between each group. That's why you perceive it as a groove. So just have like 4-7 kicks play over the course of a quarter of a bar.
Try changing your MIDI grid to a triplet grid. That could give you some good results.

Thanks guys. Played around a bit and took some tips. All I had to do was to put the grid to 1/32 and put them in at some random points.
Although I really would like someone to help me out with grooves/swings

Not exactly related to the song but Ableton's got little MIDI preset things in the library. They're basically just MIDI clips without a patch or an instrument playing them. Go to the browser -> Places -> Packs -> Core Library -> Swing and Groove
