Re: Girls and music production?
This is a ridiculous thread and totally retarded...firstly why does it matter to you who makes the music and secondly why would girls be worse at it than men?

Not for me.
Yeah it is noise, not everyone's taste I know. I just chose that one because she's actually playing live. I've seen her DJ/play more traditional hard techno/digital hardcore stuff. She does a majority of the music in ATR too. Here is more traditional sounding music from her:Lye Form wrote:its just a horrible noise to me.

Re: Girls and music production?
It was an interesting discussion once, more so how less women choose to do it than men, social pressures or maybe more nature.Pistonsbeneath wrote:This is a ridiculous thread and totally retarded...firstly why does it matter to you who makes the music and secondly why would girls be worse at it than men?
There is something to be said that men are usually more obsessive than women, so men will keep at something until they beat it, music production takes that kind of mentality.
The fact that the women who are involved in the scene are some of the best (Ikonika, Cooly G, Emma, Nina Kravitz/Maya Jane Coles if your into that stuff) kinda shows that not women are definitely not "worse" than men.

Re: Girls and music production?
We shouldn't fall into the trap of listing out female producers everytime a thread like this comes along.
There are *definitely* less female producers (at least in the scenes I'm involved with) than male. Why. Established patriarchal industry? Probably. I think it's shaky ground to suggest women doing appreciate the techy more atonal approach, though it's hard to deny that when you go to some of the more niche parties. The male obsession with being niche and nerdy perhaps? It certainly took a while for girls not too feel hopelessly outnumbered at the early dubstep parties. I really don't know, because I'm not a girl.

also, I don't agree with female producer (those that exist) being any less capable or proficient at production.

Re: Girls and music production?
it's been this way forever, like in the old American jazz scene -- most every player was a man, but the most noteworthy vocalists were billie holiday, sara vaughan, ella fitzgerald, etc. Of course there was always exceptions, i can't remember the name but there was a female pianist who was sick.
It's partly because of patriarchal industry forces, but that kind of shit doesn't come about for absolutely no reason, nor is it constructed out of cruelty or misogyny. (imo) ... it's just that on a grand scale societies take shape by being whittled fro the forces of nature.. Biology demands that the female sex bear children, and thus they are more apt to care for children and homes, while men are born with a drive to fulfill other purposes with the upmost adequacy.
Translated to any music scene, that means part of being adequate and attracting a mate, being evolutionarily successful is learning an instrument, becoming a badman producer or MC, etc. devoting your time to learning dominance and skill.
Obviously I'm not breaking any doors down here and we all know this already.... it just kind of irks me when people seem to forget that there's a very real biological reason for the constructs of society to have evolved the way they did.
It doesn't mean anything about women not being good at it. It's just an overarching division of skills and priorities. today's more progressive societies allow more people to side step typical gender roles and devote themselves to their own lives' passions. Like in jazz and blues today we have the bass players Tal Wilkenfield and Esperanza Spalding, who is also a top top vocalist herself but can play incredible bass at the same time.
Women have all the talent and potential any man does, but the survival of the human race all but depends on their willingness to fulfill the role of a mother

Re: Girls and music production?
Isn't it just more like girls play with barbies, boys with hotwheels. I think it's not that complex.
Also, from the people I know who know shit about music 90% are guys.
Now that I'm thinking about it.. what are girls doing all day

But your point goes back to my earlier point. Men are valued for their actions, women for existing. It's not 'patriarchal', nor is it matriarchal. Women were just historically the limiting factor in reproduction so society places more value on them. Men have got to prove their worth, women don't. So we have to 'do' things to prove it.

i saw an experiment in which they gave to small chimpanzees a car and barbie to play with, all the females played with both but the boys only used the car
