My MacBook is a merker. I've got the black 2.16 ghz model and upgraded the hard-drive and memory. I use it to run Macromedia, CS2, Reason, Soundtrack Pro and it never, ever fucks up.
Does depend on what your gonna be using it for, particularly if you're looking to run a few programs at the same time. Might be worth upgrading the spec a bit especially if you're getting a student discount.
In my experiences, Macs/OSX piss all over PC's/windows. Well built, easy to use, durable, reliable, good battery life, no viruses, sick screen and visuals (especially on the glossy screens) and they look dutty!!

i work in a corporate mac environment ( over 20 mac stations here), it's really about what you plan on doing with the mac. if it's not going to have creative uses for you, then don't buy it just for the looks. if you do decide on getting the macbook, the best advice i can give you is to max out the memory immediately. os x is a memory hog, and you'll find that the more memory you have the faster your machine will behave.
erm. it's all much of a muchness really mate
