New computer... how should i save my projects?

Post by balthazarely » Tue Jul 09, 2013 7:11 pm

just got a new computer and i really wanna work on saving things correctly to keep performance good and my computer clean.

i use ableton and would like to hear about how you all organize, save your samples and projects. Im thinking ill keep my drums/samples on my computer's HD and use an external for my projects....

I would keep your projects on your computer because I like to go back to old projects and grab old patches / midi / drum loops / whatever. you can do this through ableton's library. I'm sure it would be doable plugging in the external hard drive every time you want to do this but it would be kind of a pain.

make different folders for different types of samples. I would keep the go-to samples that you need for any song on your computer and then keep everything else on the external because you won't need them as much.

Either use two hard drives, one for apps and OS, one for data. Or partition your drive and do the same thing.

I have a Projects folder on my backup drive, then I keep things organized by folders EP/LP>Song>...then I have project files in a folder per song and samples folder per song.

As a general samples folder I just divide stuff by folders Kicks, Snares, Vocals, Hats, Percs, Synths, Acoustic Instruments, Breaks.
