It's not my profession anymore, I'm older than 14+10. Advertising revenues wouldn't pay me enough to give up my 9-5 these days, as a teenager they meant I could do something I was passionate about instead of getting a paper round and without having to ask my parents to pay for my hobby.Phase Down wrote:okay angry wrestler, you're getting a little defensive here.. if you think that without advertisements only government websites will run you have been blinded by your own "profession" just a little bit... you're right though that gaming websites are pretty much advertisement ran.. so i applaud you on thatmagma wrote: Yeah, I only spent 10 years of my life running gaming websites for profit through advertising that would've never been created if I couldn't have paid for their traffic somehow as a 14 year old. Advertising allowed me to make more money with more traffic, so no matter how much traffic I got I could always pay the bill. Remarkably appropriate.
I guess we should only let kids whose parents can bankroll them or have applied to government schemes to get ideas approved for funding make any kind of mark on the Internet though.
You're right, I don't know jackshit about this.![]()

So, pray tell, what will the hosting/traffic costs for independent websites be paid for if not by the Government or by advertising? It's either got to be covered by the users of the website (and who's going to pay to join a new site with no members that nobody's heard of yet?) or by start up capital which would mean less people taking risks on websites that don't make obvious profit (this one and the majority of independent websites) because they've got to convince a bank (or Mum and Dad) to cover the costs until a profit starts being made.
Perhaps I've missed an obvious solution which you think is so clear you don't need to tell us?
It's all well and good debating, but you can't just keep saying "YEAH, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING" and not providing alternative examples or you'll just look like, well, like you do right now.

I disagree, we are just to lazy to do this properly so we leave it the "free market" to sort out AKA "I'm rich so fuck you"wub wrote:sd5 wrote:owning land
But it's good to own land.
Not that I can particularly think of a fair way to do it either. I guess that's because I consider myself a bit of an anarcho-syndicalist so society has gone way past the point of repair due to overly-dense population.

Alcoholism. Seen it ruin too many lives. And not just the alcoholics. This is for the kids.
Punishment - mandatory rehab and a chip in their body that alerts someone if they ingest a single molecule of alcohol, in which case they would have to go back to rehab.

Re: If you can make one thing illegal...
By far the best answer so far. The private, for-profit prison industry is a form of slavery or kidnapping. They corrupt and manipulate politicians into keeping drugs illegal and manipulate society into thinking they are evil so that they can continue putting massive amounts of people into prison for something that doesn't deserve prison time. That's a felony in my opinion.Soul Of Seun wrote:I would outlaw the privatization of most public services/institutions, especially prisons. Absolutely private penitentiaries as I believe it represents a conflict of interest when prisons are built solely with the goal of filling with them to capacity with inmates for profit. The US has serious problems with incarceration, especially when it comes to imprisonment for non-violent drug crimes. Punishment for violation would be shutdown of said facility and heavy fines.
I would outlaw corporate donations to political campaigns entirely. And private individual donors can only give x amount of dollars within x amount of time. The punishment for corporate donor-ship would be a fine not less than quadruple (arbitrary amount) the amount given to candidate A.
I would also outlaw Amanda Bynes from twitter. Punishment will be death.

no i have no qualms with people eating meat. do as you please. i just think killing animals in general for our own greed is wrong.
just cos other animals do doesn't mean we have to. we have a higher state of consciousness where we can survive without eating meat.

Re: If you can make one thing illegal...
fucking hell this thread is full of retarded ideas
So if no one owns land one day someone could turn up and kick you out your house and lay claim to the land? i do agree that the national trust for example owning beaches and shit shouldn't be allowed but then again who would take care of it and keep it all looking nice?
Eating meat illegal looool wtf if you don't agree with humans killing animals for our own benefit then you may as well kill yourself as we are only here as a result of billions of years of things killing and eating lesser creatures. Also GWA as laszlo or someone said in another thread how do you justify your cocaine use? do you not mind people suffering for your pleasure but are dead against animals suffering for your survival?
and laszlo you wouldn't mind paying a lot more money to watch t.v? Advertising is a necessary evil imo
Expanding on Pedro's idea about politicians having to have 100% scientific proof before saying things i would make preaching about*/making money off of: conspiracy theories, psychic abilities, bullshit about astral planes/chakras/third eyes/anything hippy related, homeopathic remedys and anything else that hasn't got a strong amount of scientific proof (peer reviewed research papers not the gibberish babble of some nutter) illegal with the punishment of having to complete a degree in one of the three main sciences.
*preferably even talking in support of these things should be an offence but i think that may impinge on free speech.

Re: If you can make one thing illegal...
your attempt to tell me about your history to increase your credibility..is a little sad in this case i have to be honest but wait a moment here.. small websites don't cost any money in terms of hosting and "traffic costs" so no one needs to pay to join a new website, when there is enough demand which requires more advanced servers to pay for there will either be paying or donating members (or alternative ways depending on the type of website), or the demand goes down again till there is no need for an real server and it will be back to a small ran website with no cost again.magma wrote:bladiblablabbladibla
and start up capital for a website..?? the internet isn't made out of facebooks.. surely you know about the amount of websites which started as nothing and simply became massive because of the demand right? the amount of websites that require a real capital or hell even a bank investment is something(that doesn't happen a lot in the first place compared to all the websites which are set up daily by regular every day people for the love of it) called a business and if their only income is actual advertising(which i doubt it is) then obviously yes making advertising illegal will kill those.. but saying the internet will die is a bit over the top don't you reckon?
The amount people do for a little bit of recognition... the whole open source community.. i assume these will also die off without the flashy banners at the top? On that note I don't even see a banner at DSF currently so what does that mean? Maybe they should sell our email addresses to record labels or otherwise the website will die..
