Home Studio Setup HELP?
So I've been thinking on saving some money to buy decent gear, since I got at this point where I really need some equipment to improve the quality of my sound...
But I'm not really good at picking monitors or whatsoever, so I just asked a few friends on each thing I should buy, therefore I'd like to check which one of these are better, or if there any better out there.
Monitors - I was thinking either I should save money for future Yamaha HS80M or buy Yamaha HS50M/ KRK Rokits 5 / Tannoy Reveal 501a as soon as possible. (Adam A7X costs way too much, I can't afford something that costs more than $400 each, even that is too much).

Audio interface - Scarlett 2i2 ( If someone knows any good one that cost less please post)
LINK: http://www.thomann.de/ro/focusrite_scarlett_2i2.htm
Headphones - DT770 PRO ( If someone knows any good one that cost less please post)

Midi Controller - M-Audio Oxygen 49

Any help would be highly appreciated! Cheers!
P.S: If anyone know any good laptops under $1000, mainly for music production and video rendering, it would be great (2 GB Video Ram, 8gb normal or something)

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
If you are doing production and video rendering do yourself a favor and buy a desktop man. In fact, just do that anyway unless you must have portability.
Wanna save money? Buy used. eBay is pretty safe these days, I buy used stuff on their constantly and never get burned. A friend of mine did once though and eBay took care of it, he got his money back no problem.
I've heard and/or worked on the monitors on your list. Yamaha all the way. Rokits are just powered HiFi speakers IMO. The Tannoys are just ...meh...wasn't that excited about them. If you aren't treating your room for bass problems you'll likely be better off with the HS50s over the 80s
I'd buy the Scarlett and the monitors used for sure, search on eBay for sold auctions and see how much they've gone for recently then wait... ;p Hell, get that midi keyboard used to.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
Yeah, I really liked your answer, 'cause HS50 and 80s are my favorite. Yeah, I must have portabiltiy due to moving at college in a different city, and while I'm home I will leave the monitors there, and just produce home using DT770 Pro and laptop, that was the idea :-/.fragments wrote:If you are doing production and video rendering do yourself a favor and buy a desktop man. I don't really trust ebay... They could've opened the monitors and took shit out of them and replace them , same for the other stuff, that's why I don't really trust them.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
I really think you are underestimating how safe eBay is to use these days. What do you think they are going to take out and replace??? I think to trick someone in that manner would be more trouble than it's worth. But maybe you can find another venue to buy used gear.

I'm down to buy used stuff, but first I have to sort out which stuff I'd buy haha.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
Yeah, eBay for the monitors. You can get a good interface for $150 new. Honestly that's a good price and worth it to not have to worry about it not working right. Monitors you should try and get used. Unlike a small interface, there not going to be moved around/messed with much and are much less likely to be messed up. IMO. Plus you can defiantly get something that would normally be beyond you're initial price range.
And eBay is totally trustable. They have really good buyer protection so you don't really have to worry about anything.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
Oh, and for laptop, you can get a MacBook Air for $1000. I don't really know the current state of pc laptops so I can't comment on that too much. But with $1000 I'd imagine you can get something pretty nice or even build something good and still have money left over. I wouldn't really trust a second hand laptop unless it was refurbished by the manufacturer.
Of course, if you save money on you're other stuff, you should just get a MacBook Pro.

Macbook Air can handle video rendering?

Guess I skipped over that part.fragments wrote:Macbook Air can handle video rendering?

I wouldn't imagine it be too far fetched though. I sure someone who's more tech savvy than me can chime in on this.
Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
I wasn't really sure myself. I know it takes a lot of RAM and then a good video card. I guess any computer could do it, but it's a matter of how long maybe?Crimsonghost wrote:Guess I skipped over that part.fragments wrote:Macbook Air can handle video rendering?![]()

A laptop that can handle top notch video rendering should kill it when it comes to production I'd imagine.

Definetly going to buy a brand new laptop, but at the moment I need to sort out what gear should I get...
So far I think that Yamaha hs80m, the scarlett 2i2, dt770 pro and oxygen 49 seem a pretty good deal, right?

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
Sounds like a pretty standard budget/beginner set up man. You'll probably be fairly happy with it I imagine.
If you think there is any chance you might want to upgrade any of that in the next 12-18 months though...I'd seriously consider saving up and buying higher level products.
I went through a period of selling off entry level stuff to buy better gear and it's a real pain...hoping you don't loose money, being between pieces of gear...etc...something to think about.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
Those headphones are kinda the standard. And that keyboard is more then enough, unless you need some pads to bang out on. I dont really know too much about the interface, but it gets good reviews and a lot of people seem to like it. Unless you plan on recording live bands you probably wont need much more then that. The only thing i can really think is try and save as much money on that stuff as you can so you can get a better laptop or monitors. Not that theres anything wrong with what you picked out, but theres ALWAYS room to upgrade.
But if not, thats still a great selection of stuff that will hold you over for a long time.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
Better monitors such as? Adam A7X I suppose?
Also fragments, do you think you can post a "pro" gear, since this one's begginer? haha

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
I probably phrased that poorly, there is nothing wrong at all with your proposed setup man.
FWIW, I hate the term "pro". It's entirely possible to make great tunes on what you are planning to buy.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
Yeah, theres nothing wrong with what you're getting at all. Its all quality stuff that will last a long time. But IF (big if) you have any extra cash try to upgrade some of the bigger ticket items like laptop and monitors. Seing as those are going to be the most crucial part of you're setup. Or maybe try gettin a bit of room treatment?
Im just saying, its ok to go cheap on some stuff, but theres a couple things you want to really try and get the most out of so you wont find yourself wanting to upgrade sooner rather than later.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
I'm looking forward to buy something I won't really need to upgrade (except for laptop), but yeah, I need some monitors that will take me a while to change lol, that's why I thought I'd buy hs80m's first, then switch to Adam or something, in the far far future.

Just checked it out, frequency range from 35hz to 20khz, that's pretty awesome, seems like a great competition for the yamaha 80's.press wrote:people seem to really sleep on the event 20/20s for midprice monitors. take a look and listen if you can, I fucking love mine.

Re: Home Studio Setup HELP?
IIRC there a 7" speaker. Not sure if that makes a difference to you or not. But i used a pair of my buddys before and they took up a SHIT ton of space on my desk. Also bassy as hell. Which might not be a bad thing.vault wrote:Just checked it out, frequency range from 35hz to 20khz, that's pretty awesome, seems like a great competition for the yamaha 80's.press wrote:people seem to really sleep on the event 20/20s for midprice monitors. take a look and listen if you can, I fucking love mine.
