I do all mine myself, it's fun to try and come up with your own artwork for your own stuff. I know a lot of "big artists" do the same.

I am one of those old-school cats who think the record should look as good as it sounds.

However, I have spanned the spectrum...from using one of the most expensive "name" artists to doing a few covers myself, from calling in favors from friends (one was a big name Parisian graffer, the other was a graphic designer who is a childhood friend)...

At the end of the day - all I care about is quality. I won't compromise on quality just because someone offers a cheaper or free rate.

It's definitely more satisfying doing it yourself, I used to love making stuff like that back in the day when crazy forum signatures were all the rage

Depends, but if you're releasing your EP on a label, and they're telling you to get your own artwork etc. sorted, then don't do it. Trust me.

Generally I do my stuff myself these days, using photos that I, or a friend, take and just edit them on my phone or computer.

It largely depends on the aesthetics you're going for. If you're looking for something purely personal, then I'd go to a friend or do it myself, if you want something expansive and complex, but don't have the familiarity with the relevant programs then you may want to hire someone to do it for you.

Just curious.. Are you saying if a label sings you and offers to do your artwork for you, don't do it? Or don't do your own artwork if you're signed?

Different labels have different budgets, but if you are signed to a label, you shouldn't have to pay out of your own pocket for the artwork...

..that is unless you are determined to use a packaging or artist idea that is more expensive than the budget...

But usually there should be at least a little budget allocated for artwork if you are properly signed.

Not quite either.
Just don't sign up to shit labels tbh, that's all I guess.

Try a demo of Photoshop, or get Corel since it's reasonably priced

Yeah this was it.
You should be allowed to take care of it yourself, not forced to. You may aswell release by yourself if the're asking you to do that

My mate does them on top of his other commissions, don't know if it's the labels or artists that ask though. Check his page anyway http://www.jonnypackham.co.uk
