I might as well add something to the thread while I'm here, so here's some of the reeses I've made recently. No verb or anything on them yet, not any foley layered either, that'll have to wait till they're in a tune, haha.

Serious question, and I probably passed over it in the thread, but:

How do you get those neuro-style stabs like in Distantia by Mefjus (which have a higher end) or other stabs that seem to have a lot of low end (like the ones after 44 seconds of this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDTnYTF_lDo).

I've been told a it's basic reese with a low pass filter that has an envelope that makes it whomp, but all of my attempts have been fruitless.

Any ideas?

Sounds more like a heavily distorted sine rather than a regular reese

nah, just some eq modulation :p I rarely use vocoders, feel like they do too much to the sound

Nice tune, am I old or isnt it abit of a shame that the comments for that vid mostly say "tut on this bass! now!" lol

I shall have some experiments tonight and see if I can get anything close to this or the mefjus type sound.

These are the effects I used, in order of how they appear on the channel strip.

First I added an effect chain I made in Zebrify (the effects version of u-he Zebra2). There's a wedge wave shaper, then chorus, then another wedge shaper, then a phaser, and then a very short reverb.

Then I added some clip distortion, then an ensemble unit, and then some sample delay to give it more width.

Then I split it into low, mid, and high frequency bands, and put some distortion on the mid and high bands.

Then I put an amp on the mid band and another wedge shaper, chorus, and reverb on the high band.

Then I bussed it all together and added a little soft compression.

Then I sent the signal from the final bus to another reverb unit and then used a gate on the reverb that was sidechained to the bass signal.

So that's pretty much it for the effects, I should add i used EQ at various points along the way to remove unwanted frequencies resulting from distortion and other effects. Also, each of these effects was added sparingly, like around 20% wet-dry for most of them.

Sorry about the long answer but I figure if I'm going to post something on here I should be thorough about how I made it

I once recorded myself singing different vowels and then looked at it in a frequency analyzer to see what the differences were, it's pretty interesting to see and it might help if you were trying to figure out the frequencies associated with specific vowel sounds.

I'm using FM8 but it's not too relevant. I started by making a low-end wobble consisting of a sine with a little FM to add harmonics, then putting an LFO on the volume. I then copied it, removed the LFO, distorted the fuck out of it (with Izotope Trash, but you can use whatever) and highpassed it so that only the high end grittiness of it came through. Then I sent both tracks to a bus, making the high end much quieter than the low end, then compressing the bus heavily. The result is that when the low end is loud, the high end gets quieter, and vice versa, so they alternate with the speed of the low end LFO. After that I just added some narrow notches and had them move around a bit, plus a flanger, just to add interest to the sound.

My best reese to date. No automations, but more than likely won't be using this for a while, but am saving the patch. I've been going after this sound for a while (where it sounds low passed, but it's not), so I feel accomplished.
