Best Home Audio Equipment for EDM?

Post by chimmynah » Mon Jul 15, 2013 5:41 pm

I'm in the market for an hdmi receiver + bookshelf set + woofer for my computer. What kinds of specs or products should I look into? I want a "music" set up—as opposed to home theater package. I don't need production monitors or anything like that, just want a good system for listening.

Honestly, if you want the most quality stereo sound I'd look into getting a high end component stereo amp and the best speakers you can afford. I own a top-shelf Yamaha amp + Bose speakers. The amp is just about 10 years old and is still the best sounding amp I've come across in a home stereo setting. I think the MSRP on it was something like 800-900 dollars 10 years ago.

Look for an amp with a low True Harmonic Distortion rating (THD). Go to a shop that specializes in audiophile level equipment. You probably won't find anything super-amazing at a big box store. I went to a local business that didn't even carry any "basic" home theater setups it was all high-end stuff. Call ahead to find out how to best bring in some music of your own to listen to any their systems and bring a variety of music you enjoy.

These days it might be hard to find a plain old stereo amp. Even when I went shopping for mine a decade ago I couldn't find anything but 5.1 w/o spending well over 1K just on the amp. Onkyo and Yamaha are brands I'd recommend, but I haven't kept up or shopped in ages. Depending on the speakers you get, you might not need a sub unless you insist on rumbling your neighbors into calling the cops ;p

Is this me being weird but I've never understood the desire for the home cinema style speaker set up with a sub and stuff for a hi-fi set up.

Personally I went to a second hand store and bought a set up of an amp from the 1980s and speakers that I'm not sure of the age of (Sansui ones with 17" woofers. haha) and I'm sure that what I paid for it got me a much nicer sounding set up than if I'd bought new.

Home stereo equipment is specifically designed to make things sound great, no matter what, so even mid-level hi fi gear sounds pretty damn good. Personally, I think there is noticeable difference in audiophile level hi fi gear, but for most people it's not worth the money. I made one investment in nice gear ages ago and never felt the need to upgrade.

If you just want huge bass. Buy some big-box store home theater setup with a big sub (Sony is a good brand for mid level stuff at a big box store, build quality is still there). If that's your only goal, no need to spend serious cash.

No I totally agree that it's worth the money and there is a noticeable difference. I'm just saying that I don't understand the bookshelf set with a sub style of set up everyone goes for. is it literally that people just want ridiculous sub rumble that the home theater type set ups give or are people angling towards having a computer or film set up that they also I play music on?

I dunno, what i meant by my post was that I honestly think I have a much preferable set up for listening to music on buying old second hand hi fi gear than going for the home theater style set up you would get for the same amount.

Bose is the big business speaker for real professionals and make sure to be careful when getting fitted for your NEW SUIT after the Bose speakers get installed because you will have a party and all of the successful friends will be so much impressed.

be careful with the yamahahahas and the klispchse speakers because you will not IMPRESS the big boys at the dinner parties. is there any other advice? YES! good luck!

I used to have my dad's old hi fi speakers from the 70's, forget the brand. But when the lady and I moved to our current house they were way too big for the living room. I scored a pretty decent deal at a Bose factory outlet store on some of their mid sized speakers.

I miss the other speakers, a lot.

I'd probably recommend Bose the most if you are looking for something that's small and still sound good.

Curious though, whose speakers do you rate? Maybe I'll have to invest in a small amp and some new speakers in my studio. I don't have anything in there I enjoy listening to music on for the sake of listening to music.

Well maybe I didn't make it too clear about Bose. I mean really the problem is that a lot of their stuff hi fi wise is more just over priced than not actually any good

their P.A systems can do one though
