I heard that, you can use vocoders for other things, not just vocals

Try the 4ormulator - it's free, works in dx as well (so you can twist things up in soundforge) and can come up with some pretty nice results

Only use the one in logic, sometimes sidechain some drums to it, play some chords so that the chords are triggered by the drums hitting and then get some nice sounds that way. Will work with other instruments too obviously.

Also for similar (yet to my mind better) effect - try using vocal snippets (sustained notes rather than words are generally best) as the impulse in a convolution reverb and you can get some interesting tones with a subliminal voice effect playing (switch output to fully wet rather than mixed)
Hmm....

Like the Akai DC Vocoder

I have found that the graphic EQ helps to emphasize certain syllables that usually get lost when you vocode a signal

but I have also been known to break out the old skool boss VT-1 hardware module!

a bit of a spin on it mate - Antares Kantos

"Audio controlled synthesizer

Unlike conventional MIDI synthesizers, kantos is controlled by audio : Kantos analyzes any pitched monophonic incoming audio and instantaneously extracts pitch, dynamics, harmonic content and formant characteristics. This information is then used to control the kantos sound engine."

it can be used on a conventional voc-synthy vibe but also comes out with mad sounds - ie put in a drum solo, get out a synth melody!

plus remember Antares make the standard pop vocal fix Auto-Tune software - so they're definitely on it with the vocals

just been on their site can't find a demo (maybe they stopped making it?!)
bu they got some new thing called Harmony Engine

ah well
