FM8 "Coaches"
Looking for some people who'd be interested in coaching a dude learning FM8. I don't need to be spoonfed, ideally I'd just like to have a few people to be like "yo dickwad, make some bells, try doing so and so to make it happen" and then I'll make it happen.
I'm already reading How to Make a Noise: Comprehensive eBook on synthesis and I bought the Frequency Modulation book yesterday and read half the book before jumping into twiddling around in FM8.
It would just be nice to have some people who I could ask a question to once in awhile, I won't harass you, I'm too independent for that shit.
Anyways, if you're willing to give a driven, hardworker some pointers feel free to shoot me a PM or add me on Skype. My username is a p o p l e x y 17, all one word, just don't need any female spambots trying to get me to join chatlines, I already have real females trying to get me to hangout with them 24/7, shits annoying.
Thanks in advance.

Just look up youtube videos. I'm sure some artist you like uses FM8 and maybe the did a tutorial.

No these tutorials won't teach you anything. You need to experiment. First have a basic theory about how fm synthesis works, then open up fm8 and make a lot of sounds in it. Even if they sound shit at first, you'll notice how every time you make a new patch it sounds better. That's an amazing feeling to notice the progress. That's how I learned it.

He didn't say to look up a skrillex bass tutorial now did he? There's several good tutorials, which also teaches the basics of fm8. Also you are dead wrong. Both approaches can be/are effective and guess what YOU CAN EXPERIMENT AND CREATE PATCHES WHILE WATCHING TUTORIALS.
Holy shit really, like is that even possible...to do both... IT CAN'T BE! You know what?!? You can learn other ways as well.
ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS THERE IS MORE THAN ONE or even Jesus Fucking Christina Ricci Christ TWO WAYS TO LEARN HOW TO USE A SYNTH!?!?!?! Why yes! You can read manuals and/or have some poor soul with too much spare time personally guide you OR DO ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!! OR EVEN SOMETHING ELSE BENEFICIAL O_O!!!

Our brain learning system is like natural evolution, or genetic algorithm (inspired by natural evolution). Let me explain genetic algorithm now.
Let's say we want to find the most l33t number ever. Of course from the beginning we know it is 1337, but our genetic algorithm doesn't know it and it'll have to find out.
We need to create a fitness function which will tell our GA how l33t our number is. In this case it'll be:
fitness(x) = abs(1337 - x) where x is a number 0 <= x <= 10000
In this case, the worse the solution is, the bigger the returned value will be. Now we need to create a random set of values from 0 to 10000, which will be our first set.
9138
4446
7197
7629
4548
9704
6238
2417
334
6782
We compute the fitness functions for the numbers.
fitness(9138) = 7800
fitness(4446) = 3109
fitness(7197) = 5860
fitness(7629) = 6292
fitness(4548) = 3211
fitness(9704) = 8367
fitness(6238) = 4901
fitness(2417) = 1080
fitness(334) = 1003
fitness(6782) = 5445
Now we do the natural selection. We kill 5 worst numbers from this list, based on their fitness number.
fitness(4446) = 3109
fitness(4548) = 3211
fitness(6238) = 4901
fitness(2417) = 1080
fitness(334) = 1003
Now we populate, we crossover these numbers, in this case, we calculate the arithmetic mean between them.
fitness(6238) = 4901
fitness(4548) = 3211
fitness(4446) = 3109
fitness(2417) = 1080
fitness(334) = 1003
- new values:
fitness(1375)
fitness(2391)
fitness(3431)
fitness(2390)
fitness(3482)
Now we repeat the rating (by fitness), selection, crossover until we get a number which has fitness 0.
And the point is: If we start with numbers that are already kind of l33t (they have low fitness values), we'll get our goal much quicker (1337, fitness 0).
But if we start with values that are completely NOT L33T, you'll spend a lot of time repeating the process until you get your goal. Eventually, you'll achieve it, but if you start with the l33t numbers, it'll come to you much quicker.
Now we can compare this to our real world situation, which is non physical too, because learning is a non physical process and experience. Our brain starts the learning process with getting its first information. You watch a shitty tutorial, your brain gets the shitty values (with low fitness). Now your brain needs to spend HELLA LOT of time to get to the goal (perfecting fm8, fitness 0). But if you start up with a clear and smart understanding of fm synthesis and/or fm8, you'll first: use the fm8 much smoother (crossover) and you'll know start with these good values, because you learned them from a great source, which is something more valuable than a youtube tutorial.
Ok, that's enough.

Ok, that's enough.
Also you missed my point entirely. My basic point is there is more than one way to learn something. I never maid any claims about which method was best, or what method to use over another and in fact backed you up when you suggested just create your own patches.
I responded the way I did because all I did was make one simple suggestion; watch video tutorials and you created a straw-man of what I suggested: "HOW TO MAKE SKRILLZ KNIFE PARTI GROWL BAZZ IN FM8 (SKRILLZ USES FM8 SO YEAH)"
-As was already pointed out to you, I never said anything about a specific tutorial let alone Skrillex.
-I never shot down any suggestions, claims, or said any one method of learning FM8 was better than the other so all your computational gymnastics about what works better was for naught.
-Attaining "a clear understanding of FM8 synthesis" and a "basic theory of how fm8 synthesis works" isn't something that magically happens. You have to actually learn the layout. Someone who has never seen FM8 or any synth in their life and has no understanding of sound design isn't going to magically understand FM8's layout. This is why I suggested watching a video tutorial (among other things). A very good tutorial may provide a basic overview of FM8's layout and can help get someone started. Or they can read a manual, or have someone show them or some other method.
- "You watch a shitty tutorial your brain gets shitty values" again you are creating a straw-man of what I was suggesting. I never said watch a poorly constructed "how to make this sound tutorial" And how would you judge which tutorial is "shitty"? Couldn't it be possible there are tutorials out there that aren't shitty?? Suppose someone watched a tutorial from say Native Instruments themselves. Something like a start-up guide which functions as a video manual and not a "HOW TO CREATE SKRILLEX BASE!!!!1!!1Q!" video. You do understand the difference right? And before you say "BUT YOU GOTTA FOOL AROUND AND MAKE PATCHES OMFG" yes I already agreed with you. You gotta make patches. But then you can also do other things too like, I don't know...WATCH A VIDEO
You obviously you weren't paying attention to what I was writing as I never contradicted you when you said you needed a basic understanding of FM8.
I only contradicted you when you said "these tutorials wont teach you anything". A claim which has absolutely no evidence or substance.
But again how would you attain a basic understanding of FM8 synthesis if you've never seen a synth in your life? Do you think our brains were born with an inherent understanding of Native Instrument software? Our brains somehow evolved to comprehend intricate synths, something which was only developed in the 20th century? How would you know what controls to manipulate to create even the most basic patch, assuming you even know what a patch is? Isn't it possible that you can also save time by:
-Reading a manual
-Getting direct help from sour someone who knows
-Fiddling around and practice (try to create your own patches (notice I never contradicted you when you made that suggestion)).
-WATCHING A FUCKING VIDEO (that isn't how to make a specific generic growl)
-Something else.
Do you understand what I'm saying NOW!?!?! I'm repeating myself because I get the feeling you don't actually read people's posts before you begin a counter-argument.

I assume every fm8 user has read its manual because EVERYONE did it. How did you get that picture of me?
Just like the dog in that picture, you just have to not know what the fuck you are doing for a little bit (other than knowing how fm works and how to use the synth) and then you will start coming out with some OG patches.
