Re: Running out of Originality?
People once thought everything that could be invented by man had been, then the industrial revolution happened.
It's only because of the internet/modern computing technology and the younger generation's inability to concentrate for longer than 5 secs (social media being to blame there) that we keep getting watered down re-hashes of the same thing but there is bare innovation happening it's just not making the money that NeonHipHipEighties4x4VintageTR808RetroLogo is.

I think trying to assess the larger meta-cycles of culture like this is all but impossible to do in the present moment: it doesn't seem cogent until after the fact more often than not.
But this is something I've thought a lot about as well, and given my age... I've had a lot of time to think about it.
Essentially I see most popular music creative trends of the last 70 years as typically embracing one of two modes - either hybridization (taking 2 distinct sounds and merging them somehow) or novelty (something that sounds completely different from what people are accustomed to at that time.) An example of the former is all of the crossover movements of the 90's (rap metal, etc.) An example of the latter is punk rock (which was the antithesis of everything on the radio in the early/mid 70's.)
Each of these modes waxes and wanes in prevalence. IMO we're coming off the tail end of a period of novelty and cycling back into hybridization more of late.

Really? I think hybdridization has been standardized since the early '00s. Everything is available to everyone and so everyone draws influences from everything.alphacat wrote:IMO we're coming off the tail end of a period of novelty and cycling back into hybridization more of late.
Dude, wait, DUUUUUUDE. Has HYBRIDIZATION become a NOVELTY?!?!?!?!?1

Give a monkey a DAW and eventually he will produce the entire DMZ back catalogue....
Music is so variable though that mathematically the human race is much more likely to die out than we are to rinse through every combination of sound(s) available ordered in every possible fashion.

sounds sound
if the roots of punk rock lie in '60s garage can-doism & MC5/Radio Birdman punk arrogance
fertilized by English art-school rejection of hippie indulgence/establishment authority,
even it can be conceptualized as a hybrid...& an accumulative response to it's time.
Given that '77 punk was not a particular sound but a call to kick out the jams,
musically it was an alliance of opposition to disco styling & dinosaur rock.
The Pistols/Fall prioritizing of confrontation over listenability was the dominant public relations exercise
an uncompromising extreme to rattle the cage but, deliberately, a musical dead-end.
The Stranglers/Banshees/Clash were greater influences on the subsequent new wave/post-punk
because they retained musicality & were sonically more derivative & able to adapt.

According to music (and somehow to all other cultural products as well) check the first 15 minutes:
Re: Running out of Originality?
Yeah but then there was the whole "Punk still sounds like it's based in rock music we need to radically abandon everything" thing that happened toosd5 wrote:alphalfacat wrote: Essentially I see most popular music creative trends of the last 70 years as typically embracing one of two modes - either hybridization (taking 2 distinct sounds and merging them somehow) or novelty (something that sounds completely different from what people are accustomed to at that time.) Yes - like the Coil/PTV/etc. continuum... committed musical explorers.

Re: Running out of Originality?
I agree with you but you have to limit it for the sake of making sense, the video is not called "will we ever run out of sounds". That to me is not music(literally woman screaming by itself in that clip and I don't call it music when my fiance screams either but lets not get into that) and is it isn't to the majority of people.wolf89 wrote:No because this is music and doesn't fit in the video...SKIN E wrote:If he did not do that it would be about sound itself as music is pretty much subjective, great video.

just because you or even the vast majority of people don't consider something music doesn't mean it isn't music, so long as the person who made it thinks it's music then it is musicSKIN E wrote:music is pretty much subjective

Re: Running out of Originality?
and i still think that video is stupid, he puts an arbitrary limit on what can be considered music and then goes on to say that music is limited, no shit it's limited if you limit it!
