How do you make that really strong pluck like in LRAD

Post by dotcurrency » Sat May 18, 2013 1:23 pm

Example at around 2:25:

I think its percussion, but how did they get so much control over the reverb like that? How in some parts the reverb seems to start BEFORE the perc

Another strong pluck (that probably is a synth) can be heard in this guy's WIP preview at 1:03 :

I can never get my plucks to sound strong, I turn up dimension expander, add unison, and they often still dont sound housey enough.

Knife Party used some metallic/wooden modelling synth - I'm not sure what, but apparently they messed with metallic & wooden properties of the sound to get it "plucking" really aggressively.

As for the reverb, it just sounds sidechained so that it leads into the next pluck.

This, you could also try reversing some reverb for a similar effect

Layer a square wave pluck with a hollow snare hit. Make sure the hollow snare is punching on the same pitch as the square wave and hitting in the 200-300 area really hard, and make sure the square pluck has a nice amount of reverb or enveloping.

It sounds like it's a square, you at least have the basics down. Why use Massive for a pluck? Use something simpler like Sylenth1 or 3xosc.

Anyway, you could achieve something similar by using two or three square oscillators depending on your taste. Have one be like two or three semi-tones above the root, and the other oscillators, one and/or two octaves below the root. Boost the lower freqs with Sylenth's Overdrive, or whatever it's called, or just EQ it to taste. Compress, and fiddle with the volume of the osc's, but keep the lower osc's amps very close to equal.

You're trolling, right? If you use Massive, but can't use a simple subtractive synth like Sylenth1, something doesn't seem right. The concepts are basically the same, and can be applied to any synth. Sylenth is the only synth I made actual usable presets with. And that's because it's so basic. I suggest, if you're being serious, you brush up on your theory, and within a week, you'll be synthesising usable sounds -- I promise.

I love Sylenth, it is great for thick house based sounds. But LRADs pluck was definitely done it a modelling synth.

1. I am in no way joking, haha
2. I am in no way blaming Sylenth for my....simpleton-ness
3. Everything I make in Sylenth generally sounds the same (again, probably just me)

No matter how hard I try everything I make in Sylenth always - ALWAYS sounds the same; which sounds like supersaws. I change the waveform around a lot, vibrato, filters, I cant get anything out of it besides Saw sounding stuff.
I was looking for some good reading material on sylenth sound design but I couldnt find any. If you can help me, by all means, please do. :dunce:

Lol. I'm actually in the same boat. I just found out about this book about synth programming that's supposed to be written for us noobs. I read a few pages in the sampler, and I can tell it's written in simple plain english, with good explanations, and everything. It even shows you how to program basses, real instruments - from pianos to strings, woodwinds, brass, and even percussion.

I'm desperately looking for a full copy -- preferably in pdf format, if anyone has one -- and I think you could do with a copy as well.

It's called Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook.

Before everyone goes apeshit about piracy and shit -- I tried looking on kalahari.net and takealot.com, etc, but I couldn't find any copies. If I do find one though, I'm gonna buy it.

Oh, and F*** E-bay, I'm never using that again.
