word, this is kinda true at the same time but i also disagree with it a bit cause literal tutorials on you tube showing what exact parameters you need to have on which vst to have a similar sound to some "professional" track has actually genuinely helped me understand synthesis and be more creative.

This. Some of my best productions have come about since I stopped trying to 'learn how to produce' and just messed about with sounds I liked. The learning bit helped but I think there comes a point where its more important, and productive, to practice what you already know than it is to try and learn new things.

yep. I read 'the war of art' ... it got a bit religious/annoying near the end - but somehow worth reading esp if you can pick it up cheap.

I'm convinced I'm maybe the world's best at making growl basses with garageband's standard tools. I learned it all by myself too, zero tutorials.

Amen Wub.
One of the most inspiring things is just how clueless some of my favorite producers are. Listen to Jon Gooch on Mau5hax act clueless when someone mentions that he could avoid putting his bass sounds 100% mono by splitting frequencies. I watched an Ed Rush and Optical interview where they said not to use a limiter on your breaks, but to put them in a sampler and turn the volume up so it cut off the peaks on the hits. Of course, we all know how low tech Burial is behind his PC.
The point is that your production techniques are a MEANS not an END. They facilitate the creation of your ideas, but are not the ingredients of your vision.
