What British/English players have actually managed to properly take root abroad? Can think of plenty of disappointments... maybe it's just that I stop following them as much, but Beckham never seemed to quite live up after leaving United, McManaman disappeared like a gangster heading to the Costa del Crime, Owen's career pretty much fizzled out in a season at Real...
Same with Ian Rush when he went to Juventus.

Only one I can really think of was Owen Hargreaves, but he doesn't really count as he went straight from Canada to Bayern? :?

Beckham did hold it up for Madrid imo, even with the high calibre of players that they had in that squad back then.

Didn't this stem from a discussion about Bale?

Isn't McManaman the most successful Brit abroad ever?
McManaman and the team then returned to Spain and established themselves as the side that went all the way to the Champions League Final in 2000, under new coach Vicente del Bosque, who had replaced John Toshack in November. McManaman's form in the build up saw him receive several man of the match awards, forming a strong midfield partnership with Fernando Redondo, as Madrid beat holders Manchester United and Bayern Munich to reach the final. It was at this 2000 UEFA Champions League Final at the Stade de France in Paris that McManaman experienced his finest hour as a player – scoring a spectacular volley in a 3–0 victory over fellow Spanish side Valencia.
Johan Cruyff described McManaman at the time as the most useful player in the "Galaticos" because he was "everyone's best partner on the pitch."
McManaman managed to pick up a second La Liga medal for the year, and was in the squad that won the Intercontinental Cup in Japan. These trophies, in addition to the others over his four years at the club, meant McManaman became the most successful English football export to ever play overseas.
Real Madrid

La Liga (2): 2000–01, 2002–03
Supercopa de Espana (2): 2001, 2003
UEFA Champions League (2): 2000, 2002
UEFA Super Cup (1): 2002
Intercontinental Cup (1): 2002
He did alright. He just wasn't covered very much, he was underrated by the press at Liverpool, and it was before the Beckham move to Madrid, so foreign football wasn't covered as much. The fans loved him, some of the best players in the world at the time loved him, he defo did alright.

Ah, maybe it's just that he disappeared from the England selectors sights and I couldn't be arsed to follow him then.

Guy didn't get the goals for Blues (he did everywhere else though, machine!) but his biggest effect was fucking defences up and allowing everybody else to chip in.

As part of the team that went 14/15 prem games unbeaten for BIRMINGHAM, he'll always be a G.

Pour out a 40 for Chucho.

in terms of english players abroad, gazza is still loved at lazio i think- as is john aldridge at real sociedad (despite him by all accounts being a bit of a twat)

sad to hear about benitez. I remember him having a good run of about 4 or 5 games and scoring one really great goal i think? he was going to be the guy who took birmingham to the next level etc. then he never really quite did it again.

Cappello said that Trevor Francis was the best English player to have played in Serie A. Ince did alright in his short time at Inter too.

Think it's safe to say that with Under-21 Left Winger Kenny McEvoy on their team, Spurs can sell Bale.
