Orchestra Baobab - Pirates Choice. I urge you to get it....1983 but timeless.
Also, Fela Kuti - the greatest ever in my book.
I really like Susheela Raman - Salt Rain (her first album) is my favourite.
Loads more but about to pop into a meeting.
If Geiom is reading, I bet he has some good recommendations.

Bye. I've changed my password and left the boards...Too much time on here and not enough work being done.
if the asian/fusion stuff interests you:
Karsh Kale
Tabla Beat Science (the live stuff)
Nitin Sawhney
Talvin Singh (not new but the sonic pallette is bad ass!)
AR Rahman is a god in bollywwod (that theatre show bollywood dreams is him and lloyd webber collabo so you get the drift)
i used to be well into the asian fusion stuff and worked with nasha records (on a downtempo vibe - whihc theyve stopped now)
for the samples folks -
lots of old indian stuff (especially circa 60s LPs) are panned hard left and right (ie one channel percussion only, other channel vox/music)
also if rhythm programming is your jig checking out classical table patterns (not mad-for-it solos, but when they are accompanying a prime instrument as a rhythm backing is brilliant, especially for off beat patterns eg 7/4)
Otherwise, mexican fusionists Ojos de Brujo are wicked

Ali Farka Toure is dope. or was dope should i say, he croaked it recently.
the problem with i have alot of world music is its hugely overproduced in my opinion, and makes it sound a bit sanitized and soulless.
the world circuit label seems to be fairly well respected.
i love digging for world music find it the most inspiring thing when it comes to making beats.

They are wicked, but they are Andalus Gypsies from spain, not mexicans. They mix gypsy rumba, flamenco and arab / indian music with hip hop, Feasible Weasel made a thread here about them a while ago, seriously recommend people check them out.Chunkie wrote: Otherwise, mexican fusionists Ojos de Brujo are wicked
Apologies for the nitpicking Chunkie
If you are a member of a library they can have quite good selections of world music in their cd section, so you can rent cds for pretty cheap. And naturally rip them and sample away (shh)
Far from an expert, but Liu Fang is amazing, she plays a chinese lute called a Pipa. Loads of videos on youtube of her, this is a percy.Auan wrote: Not really into the sub-continent stuff, would love to hear some recommendations on a oriental tip though.

music....
Tinawiren is a good choice - imagine tight funk licks like stevie wonder (or even the bee gees (!)) done in the most remote desert location somewhere out of timbuktu - sick live band also.

The Kamkars are an amazing Iranian folk group all from the same family I believe....
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nightingale-Bro ... 686&sr=1-1
You can't go wrong with Indian singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rahfi. They are not modern but they are classic.

I could go on forever but I won't !
K
sorry to be pedantic with the links but its not about just going on some free download site - Lata is rich but the other 2 ain't - they need people buying their music !

Agreed. My favourite is when it is just recorded (obviously with decent mic's), on location without any other treatment. I've found lots of amazing middle eastern music recorded like this. More than often the work of the various offshoots of Sufi.ether wrote:the problem with i have alot of world music is its hugely overproduced in my opinion, and makes it sound a bit sanitized and soulless.
