Re: so who's into fashion?
You can express yourself in much better ways than clothes. I used to buy a lot of clothes but have started buying vinyl instead.

I buy a lot of clothes and I don't mind spending a bit extra if I particularly like something but the last thing I want to do is draw attention to myself in public

Re: so who's into fashion?
I like buying/having nice clothes but I don't know much about 'fashion' or what's the trendy thing to wear at any given, I mainly just buy cool looking shit in charity shops, most of the stuff posted in this thread just looks a bit strange to me, each to their own though, it's not like I don't make some 'unorthodox' clothing choices

The double standards that exist between people who are into different artistic pursuits are plain stupid. Of course clothes can be high art just like they can be utterly functional - just because someone's into a different form of expression to you doesn't make them "uneducated monkeys"... it means they have a slightly different take on life to you.
This post is like going into a Venetian Snares thread and calling people lame because they don't go to Oceana and bro out to Eric Prydz. Making yourself look really worldly.
I've always had a sneaking suspicion that people who say they don't give a fuck about clothes have self-esteem issues buried DEEP beneath all their holier-than-thou sniping... why on earth would the most social ape in the world NOT want to draw attention to themselves? Apes have been peacocking for hundreds of thousands of years, just like every other species that likes to fuck. Evolutionarily, you're the freak for not caring what you look like.

looking good is completely objective, if you personally think something looks good on you then it looks goodMason wrote:don't deceive yourself into thinking you look good

Comparison to music is not accurate imo; music is something you personally enjoy and so yes of course it is up to you what sounds good, fashion is more something you wear for other people to see imo. So unless you go around blaring your music out to everyone around you and mentioning your favourite artists at every opportunity then i don't see how the two are comparable.

Re: so who's into fashion?
with clothing i don't agree, surely with clothes what matters is what other people think of how you look otherwise you could just wear a bin bag around all day convincing yourself you look good and save the hundreds of poundsparticle-jim wrote:looking good is completely objective, if you personally think something looks good on you then it looks goodMason wrote:don't deceive yourself into thinking you look good

Re: so who's into fashion?
I very much buy clothes for my own personal enjoyment, I genuinely couldn't give a fuck what other people think of how I dress and as previously mentioned I don't actually have a clue whats considered fashionable, I just buy stuff I like the look of

Re: so who's into fashion?
Incorrect; most people get dressed looking in a mirror - not by asking their friends what they should wear. They do it to make themselves happy - as a result, other people find them confident and attractive. Someone can wear high-fashion and look shit because they don't believe in it... another person can wear Primark and belong on the catwalk. Beauty comes from within - if you're the sort of person that expresses through clothes, then your clothes may well be part of that beauty.Mason wrote:Comparison to music is not accurate imo; music is something you personally enjoy and so yes of course it is up to you what sounds good, fashion is more something you wear for other people to see imo. Art can be shared, of course - I lived with fashion students and designers for a few years and they clearly get a lot of enjoyment from looking through new collections in the same way that I get listening to a new mix or an art enthusiast would looking around a gallery. I get pleasure from seeing people dressed nicely and I feel GREAT leaving the flat thinking I look good.
Why would sculpture/collage be considered "art" but dressing a human being isn't? That's just backwards. The most basic form of art in the world is clothing and makeup - we've been tarting ourselves up since before we invented fire or the wheel.
