Learning your tools is great and all but it helps when your tools are well qualified for the job. If you want mixes that translate your best bet is to get a neutral monitoring chain. Otherwise you're gonna spend a lot of time and effort just trying to hear your productions through a balanced filter, let alone making them actually sound balanced.

Better tools are only going to make your life easier. Especially in regards to your listening environment.
