Pretty sure South London Ordinance is/was a Lawyer or something? Maybe Graphic Design.
Foreign Concept was a Banker.
Mistabishi was a Banker.
Brian Eno makes all the sounds for Windows apparently. Like every single one. But I guess that's still just making music at the end of the day.
Ben UFO has/had some kind of office job.
Apparently Datsik was a Pizza boy.
Burial worked in a Bar or something between or before the Full Lengths.

sure you can. businessmen do it all the time, why can't you?
Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
Nebula (drumfunk / jungle producer) is a Geography teacher I believe. He doesn't DJ though so doubtful he makes any money from his music really.
Got to say I was surprised Coki stuck out his office job as long as he did, fair play to the man though, sounds like a level-headed guy.

starkey is a production instructor
Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
Nice, is there a limit? Surely if you're DJing and don't get paid very much you can't claim back tax on £500+ worth of vinyl a month... like surely you can't claim back more tax than you even get paid lol.wub wrote:Same with djing and production kit, drinks etc at venues, travel to and from club nights etc...Pedro Sánchez wrote:They are tax deductible because they are considered a tool of the trade.Muncey wrote:If you're a self employed DJ can you claim back VAT on vinyls?
Wouldn't you have to argue pints are a tool of trade to claim back tax on it? Go home with pockets stuffed with drink receipts lol.
Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
My mate's a house DJ and he claims back the VAT on all of his clothes as well saying that image is an important part of his career, fucking madness really!!

Haha, that's great^
What isn't important then lol. These videogames I play are necessary for inspiration. The internet obviously is necessary for sending mixes, tunes etc.

TBF most businesses you can claim back your Internet usage for work purposes.Harkat wrote:The internet obviously is necessary for sending mixes, tunes etc.
Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
Nah you can't... not in the UK anyway. You cannot claim alcohol as an expensekidshuffle wrote:sure you can. businessmen do it all the time, why can't you?
And you can't claim the VAT back on anything unless you're VAT registered. But you could and should claim your vinyl as an expense (which means its cost is deducted from your taxable income).
And yeah internet is a legitimate cost. THough not 100% of it. If you're claiming 100% of it's cost you're liable to provide proof of it being 100% for work activities.
Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
how much would you have to be earning from gigs to be able to claim back records? enough to get taxed presumably?
