Post by Renewed » Mon Aug 05, 2013 3:45 pm

No sitar in it, but the pack "Percussionism" to be found on Loopmasters sorted me on tabla and the like. Did you check freesound?

Don't know of any sitar packs... to be honest, I don't really consider it an instrument that lends itself well to sample packs (unless it was part of an extensively sampled VST - like East West does for classical stringed instruments).

When wanted to use sitar in a track, I found it easier to find a sitar player and have her play live on my track. :W:

Next best thing: sample Ravi Shankar albums. He's done a fair few OSTs as well, these are often times easier to sample.

I found this ages ago and it's pretty decent for a free VST and has instruments similar to what you're looking for

How legal is sampling actually? Like taking 5 seconds of, say, a sitar song from the 70s and re-using it?

For a copyrighted song (as most commercially released records are).... technically it is not legal. The reality is, if you chop it up (don't just loop the 5 second chunk as-is), possibly repitch it, etc... you will probably be fine.

There have been plenty of copyright / legality discussions that you can look up to prevent the thread from derailing too much.

I found some good free kontakt patches of sitars and see African percussion, I'll find the link and post it. If you don't have Kontakt just use the samples

The samples come with the Kontakt patches so just use them instead of opening the patch and you can load em into any sampler - http://0on3.wordpress.com (there are 2 Sitar packs in there)
