Ain't the VAT registration threshold over 60 grand, I doubt any Dubstep 'musicians' are bringing in that, maybe a few who run labels, maybe.DRTY wrote:Nah you can't... not in the UK anyway. And you can't claim the VAT back on anything unless you're VAT registered. But you could and should claim your vinyl as an expense (which means its cost is deducted from your taxable income).
And yeah internet is a legitimate cost. THough not 100% of it. If you're claiming 100% of it's cost you're liable to provide proof of it being 100% for work activities.

I wonder which ones are taking home amounts like that?
Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
I should think quite a few earn over 60k, its 79k atm I think (for compulsory vat reg). Though DJs wouldn't be charging VAT directly, the agencies would be, as the agencies are basically contractors. The DJs are self employed. Though I guess if a DJ is earning over 79k then they would have to charge the agencies VAT. (I'm not 100% on that)Pedro Sánchez wrote:Ain't the VAT registration threshold over 60 grand, I doubt hardly any Dubstep 'musicians' are bringing in that.DRTY wrote:Nah you can't... not in the UK anyway. Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
more than you think probably! let's say a DJ plays 52 gigs a year... (that's 1 gig a week; very conservative for a 'big' name), and earns £900 a show (also conservative); boom £46,800New Sense wrote:I wonder which ones are taking home amounts like that?

Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
as long as continental europe doesn't have to pay twice the booking fee UK promoters pay, I could name you quite a few DJs/producers making considerably more than 60 grand a year. apart from skream and benga, obviously.southstar wrote:Only the kind we never mention on this forum

Yeah this. There's obviously expenses to take into consideration like airport food etc which doesn't sound like a big deal but it all adds up, but you can make a fairly decent living even as a mid-level DJ. Only problem is it isn't always a long-term career... you're usually 'cool' for several years or so then the amount of bookings you get goes down etc, respect to those who have been able to do it for decades thoughJurkhands wrote:as long as continental europe doesn't have to pay twice the booking fee UK promoters pay, I could name you quite a few DJs/producers making considerably more than 60 grand a year. apart from skream and benga, obviously.southstar wrote:Only the kind we never mention on this forum

I reckon Richie Hawtin is fucking loaded after hearing what he's asked for booking fee wise before.

Yeah, he is way up there on the booking fees but he deserves to be, he's put in the hours.wolf89 wrote:I reckon Richie Hawtin is fucking loaded after hearing what he's asked for booking fee wise before.

Shame he's now a boring pretentious nob though now
Re: Dubstep musician with 'real' day jobs
I used to do flyering / promo work for a few promoters in my uni days... they said that the house / techno / electro DJs they would book for nights charged loads compared to the drum n bass / dubstep DJs they would book for other nights. £10k-15k for some of them for a 1.5-2 hour set. At this point dubstep was not as big as it is now but even the top D&B artists at this time were only asking for a fraction of this amount.

Mistabishi was a Banker.
Brian Eno makes all the sounds for Windows apparently. Like every single one. But I guess that's still just making music at the end of the day.
Ben UFO has/had some kind of office job.
Apparently Datsik was a Pizza boy.
Burial worked in a Bar or something between or before the Full Lengths.
