Turning off the limiter on the master channel in FL 10.

Post by Patchwirk » Mon Aug 05, 2013 9:00 pm

So I was talking to a rather rude producer about tips on my tunes. He suggested that I turn off the limiter on the master channel and then re level everything, as it will apparently be mixed down better that way. I felt that it hurt my tunes more than help them, really, but he insisted on it. Screencap of the conversation I had with him.

And advice from another person, who does recommend a limiter: http://gyazo.com/1d7c5e203585b0576c3036d3b78885c3

I make music, and I came here to discuss it. If you want to hit me up on skype, its jimbo_tulpa_slice, and my FB is Logan Patchwirk Winterhelt.

Also, why do people always put Skrillex and deadmau5 together and think it would be awesome, it wouldn't.

This guy's obviously a tool who's up his own ass but he's not entirely wrong about limiters mangling tracks.
Get your mixdown clean without limiting and then use it at the end to catch peaks and squeeze an extra dB or two of gain out. Compress at the source not the master.

Don't turn off the limiter, it's just there no make sure you're not clipping stuff. That guy's also right though, if you can properly mix your stuff, there really doesn't need to be a limiter.

This guy sounds like a tnuc but imo he's right. You can use a limiter to prevent clipping the master accidentally to protect ears/equipment but if you gain stage right and mix correctly you don't need it there to improve your mix. Turn your monitors up if the mix is quiet then bring up the level in the mastering stage.

Wow the arrogance from that Savid guy made me think he must have at least 1k followers/likes for that false sense of importance but nope all follow backs on Soundcloud and 104 likes on Facebook.
I wouldn't have anything on your master, a limiter could be useful as long as it's only set to catch anything going over 0db (nothing should or you're clipping) which might hurt your ears/speakers but anything messing with the sound on the master is counter productive when mixing down

And that Zircon guy saying a limiter is essential so you don't clip... What?

Usually I find myself trying to inject more dry dynamic signal back in than trying to compress further at the master. For instance bass will get compressed at the track level, then my bass splits will get bussed together and compressed, which will then get sent to the instrument buss and get compressed there, and then on to any glue on the master. That's a lot of compression. Usually too much compression. No need for a limiter after that unless it's just catching errant peaks.

tbh it's all down to personal preference, I prefer not having a limiter on while making the tune/mixdowns, but there's plenty producers who do have a limiter on and their tracks still sound clean and nice.

The best way to instantly make your track good is just download the Michael Norris plugins and put one of them on the master IMO

What works best for us is while you're mastering*, mix into a limiter while looking at a spectrum analyser to see where your peaks are. As you're compressing your master bus, the relative levels of your highs, lows, and everything else is going to change. If you want to preserve your mix, you'll need to re-balance your elements as you're squeezing the master. Also, I find that if you want to make your track loud but also punchy, you'll have to mix into your mastering chain or else you'll never know if the transients on your tracks are loud enough to survive the mastering compression.

*By mastering I mean finalizing your mix with stereo bus processing.

Fuck both of you. I swear everyone makes music by committee these days, imitating everyone else's shit and discussing shit no end. This is meant to be an art. If you don't understand the science you can still make good art.
Just lock yourself in a room with some beat making shit and don't come out til you've made something ill.

Limiter on master is fine, just don't push it hard, or preferably at all. Spend more time worrying about the other channels.

Big in the game

Just make music, don't worry about what some tnuc on a forum is telling you (inb4 hypocrite)

The only thing I can say I am glad I have learned is proper gain structure, which is pretty important but if ur good at arranging and composing then u can still make good tunes without a decent mixdown

Besides, who needs limiters when u have $wag m5+5-2

I have my own preset I whack on the master to have a higher loudness on headphones later at night - it literally just boosts. You can level just fine if you reference - with/without.

It doesn't hinder your music if you don't RELY on it. It also helps to find a limiter what isn't colourful to not shield your track in saturation/brightness during the creating stage.

Mix downs should be done without the limiter at first, then switch it back on and adjust for soundcloud - if you're releasing a track i'd do a whole new mix without the limiter ever stepping foot in it.

Still, its your music, do what your like. Where does this blokes arrogance come from? I mean its probably brostep hence the ego but still!! Christ almighty, the way he acts its like you just disturbed Timbo mid session, calling his cell asking if the beat sounds good down the phone!

WHOS THE TEACHER? haaaaaaaaaaaa! Please, please, please let him be not even 20! This is why I can't do the whole music-thing any more, I come close to slapping people around at nights and such due to their piss poor attitude.

Ok here's the story. He came to me asking for help, and one of the things I suggested was that he turn off the limiter, because it can mess with your mixing quality. He kept questioning me and questioning me, telling me I was wrong and saying he was going to ask someone else, so yeah I got a little aggressive. And now I'm scrolling through the forum and I see this. And the sad part is, he apologized to me and I accepted it. But seeing this, I've now lost all respect for him. I'm not arrogant. I know my music isn't great. I was trying to help him because HE ASKED FOR HELP.
